Do the lights (or one light in particular) blink? If so, how many times?

Inspect the vacuum hose from the cruise actuator (passenger side, gray box right next to the fender) for damage.

Check the cruise control info on page EL-260 here:

Jimbo,
did you fix this problem? I have 2001 qx4 and having cruise control problems as well. Cruise light comes on in the dash but the set button will not engage. I pulled the field service manual and there are a lot of moving parts to this but I was hoping it would be a simple fix. Did you manage to fix your problem? Any guidance would be appreciated. Thanks.

I"m having issues with my cruise control. The cruise "on" light doesn't come on at all. I read somewhere that the horn and cc are on the same circuit but the horn works. Any ideas?

Check the #11 7.5A fuse first. If that looks fine, start running down the troubleshooting steps outlined in the FSM on page EL-172 on the "ASCD cannot be set. (“CRUISE” indica- tor lamp does not ON.)" line.

THanks for the post. But how do you remove these fuses. I would think that they would just come out once depressing the visible clip.. But I did that and the damn thing don't budge. Last time I saw fuses anything like this I had to take the whole box apart because they were bolted in. Pls say it isn't so.

On mine there's a small white puller mounted on the corner of the box. You pull that out, push it over the fuse, and pull. If you don't have one of those, some needle nose pliers will do the trick.

It's just a small brown fuse that has 7.5 stamped on the end like the third down on the left, correct?

If not, can you post a picture of what you're looking at?

Oh, I already checked that one. I was talking about the one in the engine bay marked ASCD (automatic speed control device). THe big ones with the blue plastic caps over them.

Sounds like the relay. I am 90% sure you can just pull it out and that it isn't bolted down or anything. Every relay I've ever removed has given a good fight.

Another really fast and easy thing to check is your brake lights. Check that they turn on with the headlights, they get brighter when the brake is pressed, and specifically check that each of the individual bulbs in the top window mounted brake light function. The cruise control depends on one of the brake light bulbs (can't recall which one). If the bulb is blown, the cruise control won't work.
