cruise control on button wont stay on

So on my 90 hatch when I use my cc I have to hold on to the ON button and press the set button for it to work. If I let go of the button it turns off. What could it be? A bad switch?

Could be the switch itself, brake switch, something wrong with the speed signal/speedometer.

Ok. Now I know for sure its not the switch. Just used my friends and it did the same thing. The sensors on the clutch and brake pedle r good and the cruise control works. Its just that I have to hold onto the ON button for it to work
