Yeah I know this isnt Infiniti but NISTECH and Chris dont always chekc that forum.... I think that most Nissan cruise systems of the mid 90s were pretty much the same......

Anyway heres the deal... I turn on cruise control, and then hit the set button.. it then does nothing.. Then a minute or so later it will start blinking (the cruise light on the instrument cluster), and i can press any button (set, cancel, or res/accel) and it will stop blinking... Then a minute later it will do the same thing...

It started doing this one day. I went to hit the cruise and it didnt work.. Since that time (sometime during winter) it has worked once, MAYBE twice... My driving doesnt really solicit a lot of cruise control useage, so its not that big of a deal but when i do take long trips its not much fun...

Check the cable on the throttle body, very common for those to come loose on the mid 90s nissans. If thats whats wrong ,what the car is doing is trying to apply the throttle by pulling on the cable after it has pulled it as far as it will go and it doesnt see the speed maintained it thinks something is wrong. and starts blinking the light.

Right, but when you press the set button shouldnt the light show up as solid, and then turn off and start blinking, or if it cant set will it not have the light come on at all.....

Did you at least look at the cable? The light flashes when something is wrong with the actuator side of the system.[this is what pulls the cable to give the car throttle.

I checked the cable and it is securely fastened.

I forgot to add... The light only comes on when its above 30mph.. So say im at a stoplight, i turn it on... Its blink free, but the second i go above 30mph it does what i said. I press a button (set or something) it turns off.... THen a few secs later it comes back on.

yea the cruise systems dont work below 30 mph. Thats why you dont see the light blink, but that allone tells you its nothing in the passenger compartment as all the stuff in the passenger compartment is control. if it doesnt flash when below 30 all the control side is functional. Check the electrical connection at the actuator[the other end of the cable you checked] make sure its secure and if there is a vaccum line on it check if its secure and complete to its vaccum source.

out of curiosity you did check for engine codes right? your check engine light isnt on is it?If it had a speed sensor code then it would be blaitantly obvious what was wrong.

If the actuator is not working, would the light flash as soon as it was engaged..

Ok heres another side story. Fred could probably expound on this..

A while back ago they did something with the brake swithc.. Apparently it shorted somewhere, and they bypassed it.. They spliced it directly from the brake switch to the joint connector under the back seat The result was fine, except the light would blink whenever the brakes were applied, or you turned the thing on with the car off (but ignition on).. The cruise worked perfect then...

I dont know if this is related but it seemed to just stop one day..

I double checked the vacuum lines and it was in place and hooked up, and i checked hte connectors.. If it starts working tomorrow ill post up.....

I remember when I first got my Q and had the engine installed, they actually put the cables in backwards. This gave me no power (which I know, but didnt know how to fix) and the cruise would do exactly what you were saying. Once the cables were all set, the cruise worked perfectly.

Do you feel the petal attempting to grab?

the brake pedal has 2 switches on it one is for cruise cancel and the other is for brake lights and cruise. When you apply the brake it sends a voltage to the cruise, when the other switch goes open it cuts power to the cruise therefore killing the cruise. So the question here is did the cruise cut when the brake was apllied before it went out completely but after someone hacked your wiring?

Then we are back to under the hood. But dont completely put aside that someones little wiring experiment didnt damage the ASCD contol unit.

I looked in the FSM and is there any way to check the control unit...? Besides consulting??

I may just take it to the dealer and have them check the consult on it.

there is a way to put it in a switch check mode ,but for the life of me I can not remember how to do it, there is no documentation on how to do it. I learned it from an instructor in tech school, that is when I was told there was no documentation on the proceedure.

Old thread but im gonna bring it back to life.

I just swapped in a known good vaccum motor and throttle thing. Made no difference..

IM thinking that the control unit is bad? Something is making it not even come on.....
