I've seen a lot of threads on whether or not the R50 pathfinder/qx4 can tow heavy loads long distances and thought I would share my success story to help prove it is possible.

My 97 QX4 left NY with 175k miles on the cluster towing a 2900lb car on a dolly. The total weight of both vehicles, the tow dolly and everything inside them was 8820lbs.

It made the 1700 mile trip to Texas without any real issues. The alternator died, but that was a quick and easy fix in the parking lot of a parts store. The engine and transmission held together like the champ we all know these vehicles to be. We averaged between 10-12.5 mpg, which isnt amazing, but is to be expected.

The only modification was a bigger trans cooler i added onto the front of the condenser. Autozone pn 911679. The trans temps stayed between 110-120F the entire way. Other than basic maintenance like fresh fluids, plugs and struts, my Q is stock. Original engine and trans. This is quite a testament to Nissan quality and engineering.
