All I have to say is wow. That thing was at 9,000 RPMs for at least 5-6 minutes before dying, sorry if I ruined the surprise. I bet that thing would have kept running too if the radiator cap hadn't blown, that was just insane though, there's no other words to describe it.

It appears they have too much time on their hand. It was amusing to watch though. I liked the car on fire though.

Mother of god! That truley is pure madness! I think If the rad. cap didn't go off, that car would still thug it.

Actually allot of people don’t know, that a rotary engine takes 3 revolutions for 1 stroke (or something like that, someone correct me if I’m wrong), so in reality the engine was only at 3,000rpm (compare with a regular stroke engine)…eh….big thumbs down for Mazda…9,000rpm redline my a**….

cool Vid thou

I know the rotors do 3 full revolutions or something along those lines for every piston stroke, but saying it's only going 3k doesn't seem to make sense... Some roto-head wanna chime in here?

I'm not completely sure, but it looks like they left the coolant cap off before it started... unless it was a black cap or something.

But yeah damn that is so crazy! Sounded awesome at 9k also!

i think if the rotors do three turns, that means theyre going at 27,000 rpms if the crank is going at 9k , but i dont know, im not a rotary guy.

it's 3 to 1... and it's measured at the crank...

I couldnt help feeling REAL bad for that poor lil rx-7... that guy should seriously go to hell along with that engine. honestly, its like shooting a squirrell or something: there's no actual reason to do it, it's just cruel and mean. He coulda donated the car to somebody who wanted it or whatever, I donno... I could think of 1000 different ways to get rid of an unwanted motor.

That said, it was pretty cool to see though ;)

I bet the neighbors were wondering what they did to their weedeater...

cool vid though, I didn't think the motor would go anywhere near as long as it did.

you can run a rotary even in the engine is blown. this guy showed up to a dyno meet with a FD and we wanted him to run, it was far from stock, be he wouldnt beacuse the motor was blown, but he was still driving it, just not real fast.

umm... it's a hunk of metal that was broken anyway... Its strange how so many people stick up for the car. You could throw it away working or you could throw it away broken...

the people at club SI had an especially bad reaciton to it...

It's like knowing you are getting new dishes and breaking all of the ones you have becuase you know noone would want them...

Word. Those guys could have definitely done something to the engine thats more productive. But it was amusing, and kinda boring just waiting for the thing to blow..

the "crank" rotates 3 times for every one revolution of the rotor. Rotories still havent been fully utilized, just like it took decades to perfect the piston engine it will take decades to perfect the rotary.

they said the bolts werent gonna come off easy for the exhaust while it was glowing....my only guess is that hes putting a new engine in it and never was gonna rebuild. I would do it too....lol

The way I see it, the rotary is a great engine, but not enough time/money has been put into it to research solutions to the designs achilles heel, the apexs of the rotor.

Since most cars are trying to go to hydrogen power, I remember seeing something where mazda wants to make an RX8 that is powered by a super charged hydrogen renesis motor that also might be combinded with an electric motor. Hows that for development lol? I agree though, It doesn't have enough research and design put into it compared to the piston engine.

I would think that the catalytic converters caught fire, and I am also assuming that they had them at that point in time. :-) Rotaries are known for hot as hell exhaust temps, IIRC, even when running normally . . . running one of those like that would have crazy hot temperatures, I would imagine.

i think the "race pipe" was an off road cat eliminator... It looks like where the camera was that the bootm of the car caught fire... Probiby some fibrous heat sheild got a bunch of road grime in it and that caught filre... Or a rubber exhaust hangar.

probably the hanger because they said the fire got bigger when they added water.
