Sounds like a helicopter turbine. They are geared down pretty low to spin the blades and I seem to recall that this guy uses helicopter engines a lot. He has a dual turbine MR2 and a gen 3 Eclipse that is his current project.

Judging from the size of the engine compartment, it is probably an engine out of the Hughes 500 helicopter(same as Jay Leno's jet bike). They make about 500 horsepower. Helicopter and Turboprop airplane engines have a shaft attached to the front of them that goes through reduction gearing and turns a transmission. The engine and trans out of a Hughes 500 would fit very nicely in there.
