i just installed a new bat. and now my brake lights are acting wacky. the lights are always on, as if i had my foot on the pedal, its that way even when i take the key out and step out. so i took a look at the 2 sensors that are attach to the pedal. i removed both and re attached the connectors, so now whey are dangling underneith the dash. then i gad the GF stand behind the car while i pushed the buttons she said the lights turned off when one of them were depressed (the larger sensor). so that means the pattern is opposite. if i had a multimeter i could check some cirtuts.

so any help would be great. i'm planing to drive fron houston to elpaso in a few weeks.

So with your key out of the ignition your brake lights come on?

On Nissans, there are 2 sensors above the brake pedal. You will notice that the one you pushed to turn the lights off, corresponds with a hole in the brake pedal arm. This hole ORIGINALLY had a plastic bushing in it, that pushed on the button. Over time the bushing dry rots and falls out one day, leaving just the hole and nothing to push the button.

You can either get a new bushing from nissan, or do what most people do and use run a nut and bolt through the hole so that the head of the bolt depresses the button.

I have had this happen on 4 of my Nissans, always the same thing, dry rotted bushing.

On a side note, there is also one for the clutch pedal that prevents the car from starting if the clutch isn't depressed. This also dry rots and does the same thing. I've seen this as far back as a 1985 300zx and I've always used the same solution, the nut and bolt.

that fixed the main problem but i had to bleed the front left brake inorder to get enough pedal travel to stick a thumb in to press the bushing into the hole. (bleh) so now i have spungie blake pedal.

You should of started the car and the booster would have allowed the pedal to travel farther.
