On Nissans, there are 2 sensors above the brake pedal. You will notice that the one you pushed to turn the lights off, corresponds with a hole in the brake pedal arm. This hole ORIGINALLY had a plastic bushing in it, that pushed on the button. Over time the bushing dry rots and falls out one day, leaving just the hole and nothing to push the button.
You can either get a new bushing from nissan, or do what most people do and use run a nut and bolt through the hole so that the head of the bolt depresses the button.
I have had this happen on 4 of my Nissans, always the same thing, dry rotted bushing.
On a side note, there is also one for the clutch pedal that prevents the car from starting if the clutch isn't depressed. This also dry rots and does the same thing. I've seen this as far back as a 1985 300zx and I've always used the same solution, the nut and bolt.
