Working on replacing the timing belt on a 1990 NA 300zx 2+2. The service manual says a steering wheel puller should be used to remove the crankshaft pully.

I have rented a steering wheel puller, however, none of the bolts that came with the puller fit the threaded holes in pully.

What size and length bolts do I need to buy to safely thread into the pully for removal?

I use a two jaw puller. The crank bolt has an indented head made to seat the middle tip thing on the puller.

Just make sure if using the 2 jaw or even a 3 jaw to use the thick flange that is shown in es.biggs picture.

The 2-jaw puller worked great. It was designed to sit againt the dimple in the crank bolt but when we tightened the puller it also tightend the crank bolt so the pully would not come off. We removed the crank bolt and placed a 6 inch socket extension in the hole. The puller was tightened down againt the extension and pulled off the pully.

Thanks for the advice.

I used a decent sized three jaw on mine, thing was pretty so stuck too. Make sure to anti-seize it a bit when you put it back on, same with the timing sprocket if you remove it.

For anyone using a jaw puller please be careful when using those pullers. They can break the edges of the balancer and also destroy the membrane that helps to set the timing. If your balancer is stuck the force will be put on the outer section of the balancer where the membrane holds the two sections together. Thats why the holes are in the balancer so that you pull on the strongest part of the balancer using bolts. You have to find some bolts to fit in the holes. My balancer was bad because the previous owner used the jaw type and broke the edges and the membrane on the balancer. I didn't know that until i did my timing belt replacement and tried timing the engine. The timing would not set. I had to replace the balancer.
