89 240sx SOHC and i am installing a new front oil seal. took everything apart including front timing cover and everything off and replaced guides and tensioner. question is when re-assembling, do i put the oil thrower/slinger (whatever u call it) on first then tap the front oil seal into the timing cover then put crank pulley onto crankshaft through the oil seal?

so it goes in order of oil slinger/ thrower first then timing cover w/ seal then crank pulley then huge bolt and torque it down to 120lbs?

I am not exatly sure what your reffering to as the "oil slinger" are you talking about the pump on the front cover?

well some call an oil thrower as well. but it is a small metal round plate that sits on the crankshaft behind the timing cover. i think the front oil seal is sandwiched between the oil thrower and the crank pulley to keep oil in the cover and from leaking.

Sorry to hijack this but I didn't wanna create a very similar thread.

I had the front cover off of the engine I'm rebuilding off and pulled off the seal. Quick question though, when you buy the new seal, does it include the piece of plastic that goes around the hole? I'm sitting here looking at a bare piece of metal.

there is nothing between the crankshaft pulley and the seal.

There is no plastic thing for the seal the seal pushes right into the metal cover.

this is a small metal ring that i had to pry out with a flathead screwdriver. the old oil seal was stuck to this so i figured it all was supposed to come out. i think i may have messed up my timing cover so i am going to buy a new one. below are the pieces i took out of my timing cover.

all three of those peices you have laying there are suppose to be one peice. get a new crank seal and you will see what I mean.

ok here ya go. old worn out crankshaft seal.

metal ring that i had to pry out of the timing chain cover. and old ring in the backround.

messed up slinger and new crankshaft seal.

slinger on crankshaft.

new crankshaft seal barely in the crank hole in the timing cover. i know i have to push it in all the way but this is just to show you the fitment. it fits perfectly tight in there.

backside of my timing cover that seal fits into. this is the part that i had to pry the metal ring out of.

if you want some more pics just let me know.

the first to pictures where your holding parts. those were one piece at one time. feel the outside of the new crank seal it should be hard like the ring you pried out, when you removed it you tore it apart.

Okay, since this whole thread is about a crank seal, perhaps you can help me out with mine. I have a ka24e still in my 89 hatch. I have loosened the Power Steering and AC belt, but how do I remove the Alternator belt?

Oh yeah, I have read that in order to put the engine to TDC, I need to align the second knotch on the left to the pin, put the car in 4 or 5 gear, then loosen the crank nut. By then, it should break free with 330 lb/tq.

I have not gotten to this part yet, but if it does come out, all I have to do is pry the old seal out, oil the new seal and place it flush back in right? If this is correct, when installing the crank nut, how do I torque it to 330 lb/tq to the nut?

use a chain wrenchto tightne it.

I use a slightly more barbaric way of lossening the crank bolt. I use a long breaker bar and place it against the ground on the drivers side of the engine and bump the ignition swiitch this loosens it right up. dont let the car start though if it does just shut it off quickly.
