Greetings-91 Q45 175K milesI am cautiously and patiently working my way through a timing chain guide repair. I am ready to pull the Crankshaft pulley. Question: a friend advised me to use a harmonic balancer puller, not a traditional gear puller. Is this necessary? Is it a harmonic balancer or a single cast pully. If I do need a HB Puller where do you find one with proper metric bolts, etc.?

Thanks for any help.-Scott

Youll want the harmonic balancer puller.. You can borrow them from autozone... Check out Q45.org for other information...

Just pull the bolt out and yank that pulley off there!

I don't think the HB puller works on the Q. The one I rented didn't. Get a good gear puller from Sears. Put the puller's legs on the inner groove of the crank pulley, just behind the grooves of the first belt- if you put it on the back or the front lips you'll most likely chip off chunks of the lip- not good. Wrench it slowly and tap on the HB as you go to help free it up. Once it's free, it pulls off pretty easily. Good luck!Paul

A harmonic balancer puller was used to get mine off. I got it from Sears, but I had a mechanic use to to pull it off.

Didn't know Sears even had HB pullers with metric threads that small. Seems the bolt spacing on the balance fasteners is too close. Most people go with the gear puller. The HB on the Q does have torsional-damping rubber in it, but you're not at risk of shearing it off with the 2- or 3-jaw gear puller.
