Crank will not turn with cams on>>>

If I take the cams off the crank turns fine...when I put the cams on the crank is really hard to turn. Obviously it will not fire up due to this...Here is the thing....The tensioner (left looking at the engine from the front) now has groves in it. Looks like when I tried to start the car and also turned it bad hand (only half rotations at a time) that I am digging into it. Why would that happen? What am I not doing correctly or overlooking?
