Long story short. I bought my 01 Q about 6 months ago. I really love it
The guy I bought it off of said he put a new timing chain in it. It drove fine
Until about 2 wks ago then started throwing cam and cam solonoid codes. Then it
Finally quit completely.
I took it to a mechanic I trust and he said the guy didn't put the crank pulley bolt back in, or it fell out making the keyway sloppy and throwing the timing out. He said he couldn't tell If the slop was in the pulley or the crank. My question is wouldn't the crank steel be much harder than the pulley steel ? I ordered a new pulley.
Without seeing it does anyone have odds on whether the crank is shot. If the crank is shot idk if its worth fixing. I won't know anything till next week and I'm a nervous wreck that the crank is shot. :wtf2:
Sorry about the errors in this post. It's hard to type on a phone.

A shot in the dark.
Usually the pulley goes but a pulley vibrating against a shaft will play hell with the key and the key will enlarge the keyway and with a large keyway the whole thing can tear apart a shaft and anything attached to it.

If the crank is destroyed see if there is enough room to metalize it and use of a cutter to cut a keyway, or flatten one side and set screw the pulley, worst case weld it up then get rid of it.

The enlarged keyway is what I'm afraid of because He did mention vibration too.
I figured last case scenario was to weld it and trade it in.
I just hate to let it go. He said he has seen it happen with hondas and they came out
Ok. He also said jb weld the hell out of it and get rid of it lol.
Thanks for the quick reply.

Why did the previous owner put a new timing chain it? They're supposed to last the lifetime of the vehicle.

I also wondered why he would replace the chain.
I asked my mechanic and he said the only reason it would
Need replaced is if it was VERY poorly maintained, no
Oil changes etc. I'm kinda torn on this one because I don't want
To take advantage of anyone by selling them a car that's going to
Fall apart in a few thousand miles. My mechanic also said he screwed
Up the guides when he put them in. I have a friend who has an f350 diesel he might
Sell for about 8k. From now on I'm only buying wrecked cars, there is no
Question about why somone is getting rid of them.

I heard back from the mechanic today. Great news, the crank is good. I should get it
Back this week. Thanks for your input ARKVQ33. I might keep it now. I really do love
The truck. This is a great forum and I plan on Participating more in the discussions. I have a restored faith in the VQ motors. Hopefully now that it's in time I will average more than 11.73 MPG lol
