Is it revers threaded or standard?

I am having a hell of a time getting it off.

EDIT:I got it off. It is standard threaded and it came off with a chain wrench with no damage to the pulley.

It's a regular righty tighty lefty loosy.

Some of those bolts can be a serious PITA.

Worst comes to worst, take your engine to a shop near you and have them use a 3/4 (or 1 inch) drive gun.

Good luck.

I've tried every thing I can think of short of buying an $80 strap wrench and that. I even got an electric impact gun rated 250 foot pounds but it was not strong enough.

That electric impact rated at 250 lbs is the amount the crank bolt is on with. It takes alot of torque to remove.

Lol, the torque setting for the crank bolt is 353-373 newton meters / 260-275 foot pounds... hahahah no wonder your electric impact gun won't budge it!

I removed mine ages back by putting a s***ty quality 1/2" drive alltrade ratchet on it with a huge bar over the end of it, and it took two guys to hold the engine still on the engine stand! Everyone was waiting for the ratchet to explode and hit someone in the face, but amazingly, it cracked the bolt and we got it undone! Yay for cheap low quality ratchets!

I found the torque setting after I got the impact gun. I have a pneumatic impact gun but my compressor doesn't have the guts to get the nut off.

I'm going to take the electric gun back in the morning and buy a breaker bar and maybe a gym membership.

If all goes well I may have some pictures to post tomorrow. I have a good feeling that this is going to be a good motor.

I have a big chain wrench that I used, that did the trick. It was like $20 at harbor freight when i bought it.

The chain didn't damage the pulley at all? That was my worry so I decided not to use one. I may have to rethink my position on that though.

REALLY???????

Put your flexplate back on, use it to keep the crank from turning by wedging a big screwdriver or prybar against it and a transmission bolt that is loosely installed to one of the block holes. that would give you a grater advantage over any kind of clamp that can potentially mess-up your pulley.

Something like this:

And put a pipe on your ratchet like this: ( I know it not on an engine, but same principles apply)

I never thought of the flex plate. That thing came off ages ago and is buried some where in the garage.

I will try that today.

That method is a no go. The VH doesn't have that type of flex plate.

I'll just pick up a chain wrench later today.

Get this tool:

or try this:

The flexplate pic was for reference only, it was off a Subaru site, but I guess imagination has no hold on this forum.

Way to be an a** hole.

I know the pic is from a Subaru, the engine has the code stamped right on it. If you knew that method in particular didn't work why bother posting it?

If that tool is the right tool why not post it to begin with?

Any way, I found a chain wrench large enough so I'm going that route.

I used a chain wrench and it came right off with no damage to the pulley.

it took a 4 foot piece of pipe and a crowbar wedged between a flexplate hole and the engine stand to get my crank bolt off...even then i was lifting the engine up!

Will this chain wrench do the job at 5" max?

It might just fit but that flat section will not make your pulley happy.

I ended up using one of these:

With me holding onto that(not easy) and a huge friend of mine cranking on a breaker bar we got it off.
