drama drama drama I hate cars....ok.... heres the deal. I have a 87 n/a 300zx. it leaks oil. I couldnt tell if the oil was coming of the pan due to a bad seal or if it was coming off the "front main seal" if thats what its called. I'm talkin about right behind the crank pulley. I was driving down the road when all my dash sensor lights come on and my power steering cuts off. i can hear a "clankety" noise comng from the engine bay. so i pull right into a gas station and check the oil. empty. it def wasnt empty when I started driving. so i buy some oil put it in and start the car up. clankety noise still and all dash lights still on. let it run for about 20 seconds and turn it off. then when I try to start it again it turns over about once and then feels like the battery is dead. so I go to check my alternator belt and I can easily spin it by hand and everying, all the pulleys, fans, belts spin with it. I can see the crank pully just wobblin around. so Logic tells me that that front main seal is where my leak was from and that my car died because my crankshaft wasn't turning the alternator/ps.

Now with this being said I know that this is bad news bears for me and my car. And the question is what are teh chances that this is fixable? any chance that I can just replace my crank pulley and seals? if not does this most likely mean the end of my engine? should I even buy a gear puller and pull the pulley off and have a look at it? if so what kind of additional damage other than damage to the pulley should I look for?

any help would be GREATLY appreciated. thanks for reading.

I hate my life

Make sure your crank seal is the culprit. Sounds like your oil pump went dry as well with the fiasco, hence why your oil light was on for a while.

Otherwise, tighten the crank pulley to spec and it shouldn't fall off like that.

Now that you've heard the clank and ran the motor dry of oil, you should check to make sure you didn't spin any bearings. If you did, you're really gonna hate your life.

It sounds like you snapped your crank shaft at the sout. This is not good. I suspect your engine is pretty much toast at this point. Spin you pulleys as you did and see if the crank bolt is spinning too. If it is you snapped your crankshaft.

no the crank bolt didnt spin with the pully. but it was really loose. I took it off by hand. now that I have it off it looks like theres a missing sheering pin type thing that holds the pulley in set position to the crank shaft. theres indentations on both the pulley and the crankshaft, and they appear to be a little bit ground up. what could have happened to that pin? and is it possible to get a new one?

I hate when I take stuff apart in an atempt to fix it and then once its apart I can't make any sense of the problems.

thankss for reading any more advice would be appreciated

You mean that notch that's on the top of the crank's gone now? Uh...that's bad news. You're in for a new crank if I'm not mistaken now. But if you're talking about the little pin thing that's on the front cover just above the crank pulley, I think you can make another one and weld it into the cover but if it's the notched thing on top of the crank you're SOL.

well theres a "female" notch on the pully and there appears to be another female notch on the crankshaft. so I figured there was some kind of pin that maybe went in btw the 2

Yes - a pin does belong there and you can get a new one to replace it. 180fan was just saying that it sounded like you said that the notch where the pin goes was destroyed, in which case you'd be SOL. Since you can see both the notch in the crank and in the pully, they are obviously still intact and you just need to put a new pin in place.

Its called a "key" It lines the crank pulley up properly and also prevents it from spinning free. That whole in your crank needs to be absolutly square at its side to side edges. If there is any rounding of the sides of the slot on the crank the key will roll out and become mashed in there again. If the slot is rounded you will need to be looking at a crank shaft.
