This is something that's been driving me crazy for a while now, I need to get the crank pulley off to install the timing belt, but I can't figure out how to stop the engine from turning. It's on an engine stand at the moment. It was my understanding that there's usually a spot to insert a pin somewhere which will keep everything in place, but I haven't had any luck locating it. It's not a huge problem, because I suppose I can do it after I get it in the car so there's more holding it in place, but I'd love to do it now.

Thanks in advance,Brian

yeah, either use an impact gun if you have access to it, or get someone to hold the flywheel steady with a long screwdriver and then with a long handled socket crank on that big-*** bolt til it comes loose.

well, neither of those are really an option. I don't have 300 dollars for air tools and the flywheel won't fit while it's on the stand... I guess I'll just have to do it after it's in the car. Bit of a bummer, but that's how it goes :)

heh, funny thing is, that's one of the solutions I had in mind, I just hadn't figured out how to do it yet. Sweet! Thank you!

I got my engine off that old tire and on a engine stand for my build and was able to rig something up to help me remove the crank pulley bolt.I took the chain and links that I used to remove the KA...put two flywheel bolts into two of the chain links and threaded the flywheel bolts in the crank......and put one of the transmission bolts through a link and threaded it into the housing. This chain and bolts kept the pulley from spinning. Then I used a 27mm socket and a breaker bar to bust the crank pulley bolt loose. Thanks for the info!

Just be careful and don't bend any of those bolts...

You guys are soft.

Get a long enough breaker bar and a socket (is it 21 or 23mm socket)Rest the handle of the breaker bar (wrap in cotton cloth) on the LHD drivers side of the car, and place the socket over the crank pulley bolt. Put the gearbox in neutral and 'blip' the starter. The crank bolt will come straight off.

I can do this as a 'one man band', and have done so on more than a dozen occasions. I don't have a lot of hands to help when I work on my cars.

followup...

Just read about the engine stand. I made a bracket to bight into the flywheel ring gear:

I do see that this too will not help much if the engine doesn't have a flywheel.

Oh man :-)
