Hello,

My car is in the garage and the engine bay is completely stripped. I am in the process of replacing the front crank seal and I have run into a problem.......

How do I remove the crank pulley? Do I have to remove the giant 26mm bolt in the center and then attach the puller kit I rented from Checker to pull off the actual pulley? If the giant bolt comes out first, then what does the puller brace against? The FSM isn't helpful at all.

Also, how do I set the crank pulley to TDC? Can I do this by hand and just turn it until the line matches up? I have heard about setting the number one cylinder to TDC for so many applications but I just realized that I don't know how that's done!!

Lastly, what is the difference between press fit and precision fit. I was told by RichardAParr that the crank pulley is precision fit and not press fit, but what does that mean exactly?

Thank you very much in advance for the help!!

first, its a 27mm bolt that holds on the crank pulley (if your dealing with a ka). i just took mine off cuz my motors about to get rebuilt too.... anyways i had to zip it off with an impact gun. i didnt use a puller, i just tapped it on different sides with a rubber mallot and it popped right off (which may not have been the best idea, but it worked).

the crank pulley has a bunch of notches on the lip of it... just line the second one from the left up with the little pin that sticks out of the block. if you have the head off, it will be really easy to find..... just eye it up real good. the crank pulley should be able to be turned by hand if you have the head off and if all of the main and rod bearings are good.

For crank pulley:http://home.earthlink.net/~j240sxna/pul ... pullys.htm

For timing:http://www.240sx.org/faq/articles/timing101.htm

Precision fit:pre·ci·sion (pr-szhn)n. 1. The state or quality of being precise; exactness. 2. a. The ability of a measurement to be consistently reproduced. b. The number of significant digits to which a value has been reliably measured.

I would guess he meant you'll need a pulley that exactly fits your car.

Thanks very much for your help!! I should probably wait to see if I can get the job finished before I thank anybody because obviously its your fault if I can't.

Really quick though, how do I get the pulley back on? Just pound it on with a rubber mallet?

I think ive discovered the fastest way to remove your crank pulley bolt, I discovered it while changing the powersteering pump / dist. rotor and cap

1) Place socket and rachet on the nut2) Forget about the socket and rachet3) Attempt to start your car; it fails because you've managed to screw up the timing4) 10 minutes later attempt to get the engine @ TDC and discover how easy it is for the wrench to fly around and hit the radiator hose while cranking over, loosening the bolt to the point where it falls off when you touch it

Works great.. I dont know how to put it back on tho ;) o_O

lol....

But how do I put it back on? Anyway, fuzion, what is the secondary butterfly valve and why would you remove it?

Okay, so I think that I might try the breaker bar set up and crank the motor over to loosen that bolt, but I'm scared to death that something horrible is going to happen.

Assuming that everything works out okay, what are my options for re-attachment? Also, I have setup the crank to TDC for reference and I want to make sure that when I put it back on, it's in the same place..................

Damn, I might be in over my head!!

NEVERMIND!!!

I think that I understand now what to do. "Stillmatic" your links really helped me out. I didn't understand what the one guy was referring too when he said to put the car in 5th gear and have someone stomp on the brake. Now I understand! With the car in gear, the crank won't turn as you try and loosen the bolt. It also works to tighten the bolt!

What a revelation. I'll try this after I eat.
