I was wanting to paint my crank pulley but it is rusty as hell. Is there anything I can use that will take the rust off? Sandpaper would take forever. I was going to paint it black with white timing marks.

sandblaster or naval jelly. Notice, it's spelled "naval" jelly, not "navel" jelly so don't smear that stuff in your belly button or will be sad.

I'll probably get it sandblasted. There's this guy I know that has a sandblasting booth that said he would do it for me and anything else I wanted sandblasted.

sand blasting is best....but make sure to paint it asap or it will get surface rust in a heartbeat

don't acid dip it whatever you do, that will damage the rubber damping layer and the pulley will fall apart

I'll get it sandblasted. I'm pulling it off this weekend and get it done.

After I get it sandblasted, do I need to primer it first or can I just paint it?

What are you painting it with? I'd use Rustoleum. No primer coat nessicary, very durable, and designed to stick to just about anything.

They might slip at first, but I'd think that after you got a little rubber laid down on top of the paint, they'd stick just fine.
