Hi all, my 94 quest crank pulley is off center. I was checking fluids today and while the engine was running I looked at the belts and pulley's and noticed a lot of up and down wobble on the crank pulley. I pulled the tire off and and bam the center bolt that holds the crank pulley is off center. I believe it is the crank pulley. It is at the bottom and about 5 or 6 inches wide.

It isn't much off, I'd say about a 1/4th an inch. How big a deal is this?

I've heard of that on some other VG's but haven't witnessed it myself yet (not that mine aren't doing it though, just haven't looked). I'd say if you aren't noticing any vibrations its probably fine, however, I have heard of some crank snouts breaking off of the VG's in the past.

There's nothing you can really do about that except for either replace the crank or replace the engine if that is the problem. I'd personally replace the engine as it would be much cheaper most likely if it happened, though I don't think anything abnormal is going on.

Well I just got back from the mechanic shop and they told me my Harmonic pulley is bad. They took it apart. Pricey part. 145ish.

Now I have to see if I can get maybe a used one for less or something.

Ahh, ok. Yeah if the rubber inside it is deteriorating it can likely cause issues like that. I'd just drop by a junk yard or check out http://www.car-part.com for a replacement.

Hey man great link! Think I'll be ordering from it

I found my pulley there for cheap. Emailed a few to see how much is shipping. I looked at the fsm and I think I will go for it and do the job myself, northing but loosening some belts really.

Just curious to see how I should remove the crank bolt. I'm guessing I should wedge a screw driver in there... eek. Any suggestions on how to get the bolt loose? I have a pulley puller. It's just getting it started.

I have to say compared to my KA I am impressed with this engine.

The absolute best way to get the bolt out would be to use an impact wrench. If you don't have one of those available you can use a strap wrench or chain clamp to try and keep it from spinning. It'll definitely be a little more difficult to do it that way but is possible.

If it has a manual transmission you can also leave it in gear with the tires on the ground and that would keep it from spinning.

From what I can tell they're actually supposed to be just a little lighter than the KA, but I'm not 100% sure on that. They're very stout though. There are guys out there with turbo setups making upwards of 500 hp on stock internals. There are a few others out there have VG's with over 300,000 miles that are still running strong. When taken care of these engines will last for a very long time. Keep up on the oil changes and be sure to have a fresh timing belt every 60k miles and it'll last a very long time.
