Hey guys, I have an RB26 and I'm trying to get the crank pully bolt off. I've tried heating it up and penetrating oil. My air gun wiil not pull it off and it's good for 1,000 ft pounds of torque. Any suggestions would be helpful.

you need to stop the engine from turning it over. if you still have the flywheel on, then you can use a socket to stop it from turning it over.

sorry for the different username at the top but I was at a buddy's computer and he was already logged on. I've got it were the crank does not move and the bolt still does not want to come off. I'm gonna try and take it to my friend's shop and heat it up with a hotter torch. My friend said that is what they do when they pull the bolts off the 2JZGTE"s they work on. Personally I did not want to take the motor out of the garage.

I believe the bolts is torqued to like 300 ftlbs or something. You need to secure the motor, and make sure it doesnt turn over. You should be able to use a long breaker bar to loosen it. Also its a bit hard to use a torch since you want to heat the material around the bolt not the bolt itself.

I got the bolt out I had to use the torch off the welder.

Does your impact say its a 1000ft/lb gun? Or is it a 1000 ft/lb gun?

Sounds like you need to borrow a better gun from one of your buddies (then you would not have to take it out of the garage.)

BTW, I pulled mine off with a huge (3 ft) breaker bar and a socket. I used a good quaity ratchet and a long jack handle.

Good Luck - Evan

My impact wrench doesn't work as well as me with a 2 lb sledge and a 1/2" drive socket wrench. Just get your buddy to hold the socket on the crank when you wail away on the wrench.

Squirt the back of the crank pulley with penetrating oil too because if your nut is rusted in there, your pulley is probably corroded to the shaft too.

My gun is a MAC TOOLS gun and it is a 1,000ft/lb gun. I don't know for some reason it didn't do the trick. The welder did not get the bolt hot enough to warp the crank. I appreciate everyone's help.

Ok.. I just did this tonight... Install one flywheel bolt, get something long and skinny that will become pressed betweem the flywheel bolt and the engine stand and act as a brace so the rotating assembly doesnt move.. get a breaker bar on there with an impact 27mm socket, then get a ***** bar and slip that over the breakerbar... make sure w/e way you are rotating make it so you can use your body weight... and there you go... pulley bolt off.

Why are you heating up the bolt????You are making it worse.

Your suppose to heat up around a bolt, not heat the bolt itself.

Heat makes things expand. What you want to do is make the outside expand, so you can hit the bolt with the gun.A little MAP gas torch should be more than enough.

He can't really get at the crank if the pulley is still on.

Hey,If the motors in the car put the car in 5th gear and have someone step on the pedal.

By the way. What size is the crank pully bolt??I'm not sure if I have it or not.I'm pulling mine this weekend and want to pick one up tonight.

pulley puller. the 26 crank pulley has holes for bolts to pull on, so get the 2 prong puller that pulls on the bolts.

ive found that an impact wrench for some reason sucks at taking out the crank pulley bolt. There is nothing better than good old fashion 5ft breaker bar

alittle FYI here...

The BEST solution IF the motor is in the car is...

Socket with braker bar wedged agaisnt the floor or something hard, and then blimp the engine on but don't start it! The starter has more torque than you think and can break loose bolts without a problem.

On the impact gun talk, i believe they rate the gun's ft/lbs on foward tightening strength not reverse (which is lower). make sure you have oil in your air tools as well and your compressor is up to the task.

Anyways, motor out, best way has been covered, old fashion with the breaker bar.

yeah I've done this many a times at work to get stubborn toyota crank bolts out. Another way if they motor is out is a chain wrench to hold the pulley, while you break the crank bolt loose.

motor was out of the car. And i believe he got the bolt loose. yes someone suggested the 5th gear tactic however the starter use is the ****.

Yea, so I'm about to do this and my question is, should I worry about the flywheel bolt snapping in half and getting stuck in my crank? My flywheel is off the engine so there is some space between the bolt and the crank. Don't know if I should be worried about it or not.

if you dont have air tools, i suggest you to lock down the flywhele so it wouldnt turn, then use a long breaker bar, and a metal pole, slide the pole over the breaker bar, that will break it loose.

But the question is will the flywheel bolt hold up to it without snapping?

should be fine, slide in a long pry bar between two flywheel bolts to brace it

That is also what I had to do in order to get my flywheel bolts off. My crank bolt came off easy but that is an RB25 and the torque specs are way different. If you can do it, try not to mess up the threads on the lower half of the flywheel bolts so you can reuse them.
