First of all did i mess up my timing or anything!!!??? The crank pulley stayed there and only the bolt came off!!! I shut the car off right away and i tightened the bolt as tight as i could. I will torque it before i start the car again.

How do i torque the crank pulley bolt anyways? it keeps turning. On the FSM its suppose to be around like 130ft-lb or something..

So bisically i just wanted to know if everything is fine and i just need to make sure its torqued to the proper specs?

Thanks in advance guys

I've never had to torque a crank pulley bolt in while the engine was in the car. I've only had to do it while on a stand. I just used an impact gun. As far as the timing...rotate the crank if you feel any resistance (other than compression) then you have something to worry about. I highly doubt you messed up the timing though.

that wouldnt cause your timing to go off. it would just disable your pulley system, if the crank pulley were to come off.

the timing gear that goes around the crankshaft would still be in place.

timing would be fine.

wow thank you so much. I really hope i didnt damage anything and everything is fine. But i was thinking would it still be possible for the timing chain to jump over a couple tooth?

Anyways i would really like to torque this bolt down and start the car again to see if everything is in the right place. Any ideas how i could torque it? the pulley keeps moving and i really cant think of anything that could stop it from moving.

Thanks

if it's a 5spd, put the car in 5th gear and have someone push on the brake pedal while you torque the bolt down

it wouldnt jump any teeth. im tellin you, it should be fine. im pretty sure your car could run without any belts on, meaning it would run just like normal, except...no power steering, alternator, A/C, whatever. its not a big deal.

as for tightening the crank bolt, if you dont have access to an impact gun, just try to get a screwdriver or something to stick into the crank pulley so that it wont spin. i dont remember if that worked for me, but then again. i ended up using an impact gun.

hmmm..... ok thanks i really hope your right. I have an auto transmission so there isnt really much option to torque the crankshaft pulley bolt... hmmm....

as long as its not in neutral you should be able to have it in park and it should keep the motor from spinning.

if i was you i would take off the pulley and check the key on the crank shaft to see if it is ok because my pulley can loose and i didn't know and it kept on making this knocking noise. A month later my pulley was free spining freely and i took it off and found out that my key on the crank shaft broke off so now i am looking at getting a new motor.

I need to torque the crank pulley bolt to 110ft-lbs but the thing keeps spinning and i cant really think of anything besides (taking off the starter and sticking something in there to keep the flywheel from spinning) but i would like to know if there are other possible and perhaps easier way to do this? I dont mind going to the store and renting out the proper tool unless its like super expensive.

My car is an automatic and i believe it uses a torque coverter instead of a clutch so i dont think theres much help with the transmission.

Thanks in advance

Its not exactly the best thing to do, but you could definitely take ovv the valve cover and put a big adjustable wrench on one of the cams to hold it in place. I know on my CA there are six-sided spots where you can go that to keep them from spinning. I would be a little wary if it was using a timing belt, but a chain seems like it could handle 110ft/lbs.

When I took the crank pulley off an automatic ford escort I jammed a screwdriver in the flywheel teeth. Wouldnt recommend that though.

youre not supposed to use the cams to hold the chains in place.

id still say put it in drive and park it.

wasnt there a thread about this like. yesterday?

does NO ONE use the search button?

There's a crank pulley/timing chain tensioner which you can get @ local autoparts stores - helps A LOT on the auto (I did mine a while back on the old sohc). Not sure if it's actually called that, but basically it's just a really long chain & a metal bar or something from what I remember, and you wrapped it around the crank pulley & a few other places & it held in place.

Drive & ebrake should work too; maybe try a combination of those things to insure maximum protection.

I'd strongly suggest just getting an impact gun though, at least borrow one, makes it much easier.
