Okay okay, I know this is my fault for not knowing this, but all of the searching I did prior to swapping my transmission told me that S13 and S14 KA transmissions are the same, with the exception of the speed sensor. Wrong. The S14, as I'm sure many of you know, has a crank position sensor on top of the bell housing that the S13 transmission doesnt have. I had already pulled my S14 trans and purchased the S13 trans by the time I noticed this. I jumped on the internet, and found a writeup of a guy that measured, drilled, and tapped a hole in the S13 bellhousing to use the sensor. He used a washer to raise the sensor, since the S14 bellhousing is shaped slightly differently. I also did this. But upon reinstalling the transmission and taking the car for a drive, I now have a check engine light. My car is a 1998 Se, and its only mod is an exhaust. I am due for inspection in two months, and am looking for suggestions on how to either a) pass inspection without fixing the sensor, or b) fixing the sensor that wont involve completely removing the transmission again. I can get to the sensor from the top of the engine bay, but its a tight fit. Im thinking maybe the washer I used was too thick, and that the sensor isnt getting a reading from the flywheel because its too far away? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Cliffnotes- Blew trans in my S14- Replaced trans with an S13 trans- S13 trans doesnt have CPS on bellhousing- CEL as a result- Need to pass inspection... need CEL to go away.

have u tried clearing the CEL first.. its stored and doesnt go away until you clear it via ecu/scanner/or unplugging neg. terminal on battery.

Yes distance does matter, that sensor is basically a magnet and just counts the number of teeth of the flywheel. If not enough washers are used the sensor might touch the teeth and get grinded down. Basically clear CEL and try again, add/subtract washers.

Is it possible to take out the bulb in the cluster to remove CEL for now?

I installed s14 transmission on my s13. I just shaved the sensor from the outside, so it'll block off the hole. You should have found the s14 bell housing and swap it in the first place. IIRC, sensor was like 1-2mm out inside. I think it's important to have exact distance from the teeth and the sensor.

I hear you. There's not much space at all between the sensor and the floor pan, so it's extremely hard to remove and add washers to try it.

Try to contact motoman399. Alex made a template a while back for another member, which apparently worked. He may be able to give you the correct thickness for the washer. Good luck!
