ok this is probaly the dumbest question I will ever post but is there a special tool to remove the timing gear off the crankshafts nose. its an '85 VG30E btw.its not coming off. tried prying, heating and prying, hitting with a rubber mallet, light taps with a ball pein nothing, oh except the wood drift key came out.

A split jaw puller should do it. The standard finger type pullers have a tendency to just shear the teeth off or chip them. It should look like two plates with two bolts holding them together, then a puller threads into the plates. You should be able to rent one at your local auto parts store or tool eqipment local.

Go to autozone.rent harmonic balance puller.buy new bolts and washers to make the puller work with the Z31's balancer.

And step 4, figure out why you got a harmonic balancer puller for the timing belt gear.

Personally, I couldn't get mine off. So I had the machine shop pull that sucker off.

those things can be a real bear, if it will not come off you can drill a couple of holes int he face fo the gear and tap them, then use the harminic ballancer puller

it's not a stupid question at all, of all the engines I've delt with I've only had 1 or 2 that came off witohut cutting and or drilling

Damn, machine shop? not yet, i think the split jaw puller might doooo it, no it won't, the oil pump has a splash guard under half the gear. so i cant really fit anything in there. I dont really want to drill holes in it. But i might have to. im gonna try sanding some of teh rust off the cranks nose, see if that helps. maybe chilling crank or heating the gear some more.

Just sayin... when you can buy a new one from Nissan for $30, is it really worth the trouble to save it?

Yes yes it was. i got it off today. Just needed to a little sand paper, little prying, some hammering with a rubber mallet, and a lot of heat, alot.

Bumping this old thread to add my own removal story/idea for anyone who is searching for this info, like I was. :)

I wouldn't be surprised if mine had never been taken off in 29 years, it was on good. I've never drilled and tapped, plus I didn't want to spend the money on a good tap and die set. So I decided to go more basic and use my Rotozip on the crank sprocket to cut two slots on each side, in order to get a puller on it. I turned the crank, with the belt off, a quarter turn each direction in order to cut the slots. I made the cuts in the middle of the teeth. I just eyeballed it, but the width and depth of the cuts is about 1/4". I ended up trying 3 different types of pullers before finding the perfect one for the job:

You can find a similar one by searching for: "OTC Outer Tie Rod Remover", but the specific one I used came from the "Powerbuilt Front End Service Kit" that I rented at Advance Auto Parts. They both look to be the same size from the picture.

Hope that helps. Oh and you might want to watch the sparks if everything is coated in oil from your cam seal leaking. I was living dangerously and just let them make smoke, but that's obviously not a good idea. You might want to cover your alternator anyways (if it's down there like mine is), just to keep the flying metal pieces out of it.
