IDK if you guys have tried this, but I get 2 vice grips and when I get the marks on the belt lined up with the marks on the gears, I clamp the belt to the gears with the vice grips.

when I get the gears lined up where I want them I stuff a screwdriver behind the gear in front of the backing plate.

wedge those f8ckers in place, then proceed.
