Coils MAKE the 'spark' , doing plugs kinda cart before the horse , YOUTUIF BES show how-to check coils , theory here . And I don't know if car's coil may be 'integral' w/ distributor ?
Always ......ALWAYS make sure in testing coils , and connecting an 'outboard' sparkplug grounded 'body' to block (actually SEE the sparking at electrodes). ALWAYS SECURELY GROUND COIL METAL BRkt and sparkplug 'body' TO BLOCK (aligator clips etc.).
Warning # 2 = DO NOT LET THE COIL 'CUT' it's spark to MORE THAN THE .044" OR even .080" for IF you keep 'enerizing' an automotive coil causing to TRY TO JUMP LONGER DISTANCE can and WILL cause internal spark-path , 'peircing ' the Hi-voltage insulating 'layers' and coil will NEVER be the same , same as a coil sparking out into an open-circuit - like NO PLUG ATTACHED :lolling:
You would NEVER be able to tell IF damaged by that , just simply looking at it , gotta test 'em proper , AND TEST THEM RIGHT !! :lolling:

p.s. Swapping coils is done when one or more of several 'coil-on-plug' is suspected , I don't believe that's your 'setup'' here tho. I mean OTHER than buying a new one
