im looking for a sr20det. was wondering what i need to know before buying an engine off of craigslist. what to check for? what to test?

Test the compression is important. Then use a small flashlight to look in the valve cover to check the cam lobes. Ask about the break in process (it was rebuilt). Take a peak at the spark plugs and inside the cylinders. Check for oil leaks around the head gasket, main seals, and the front cover. Check the oil pan to see if it's dented. Not too much else you can look at with it just sitting there.
