Is it possible/probable that I could have cracked the head while installing the left intake cam shaft? After installing the cam shaft I temporarily connected chains and tensioner and turned over motor by hand - all cylinders have pressure except for one and three. If I loosen off the cam shaft then I manage to get pressure in one and threee.

Any suggestions?

Sounds like the cam is out of time, recheck the marks and make sure you're on the right TDC.

Removed the cam and greased the seats. Dropped the cam in so the lobes were in minimum contact with the lifters. Installed the cam brackets as per manual making sure that I could move the cam through out the process. Then moved the cam counter clockwise about 2” or 1 compression to line up the mating marks, installed the chain, guide and top cover with chain tensioner, then manually ran the engine through a full cycle checking each cylinder for pressure by inserting a thumb in the spark plug tower. All checked out just fine. This has proven to be quite a delicate operation and a good learning experience.
