im refinishing a trunklid for an s13 coupe, and i want to cover the holes for the stock spoiler, and possibly shave the trunk key hole too. the largest hole is maybe a nickel or quarter size.when stripping the paint, i discovered that there is a huge, shallow dent in the top of the lid, covered with some porous filler. some of it got removed, so i have to at least even it out again. what can i use to cover the holes? can i temporarily plug them from the otherside and bondo over, then when its dry just leave the bondo covering? due to the nature of the design, i cant access the back of the hole to put something on that side, and dont really think its feasible to put something (like sheetmetal) over the holes on the outside.any body work ppl have suggesstions?-Enzo

The smaller holes on the side SUCK. You have to cut out material in order to get a backing in there (like the mesh that comes with a can of Bondo) I did it the ghetto way. I just used an a$$ load of Bondo to actually make a little mountain of Bondo in each hole till it filled. Now, for the big hole that the wiring for the light passes through, I used epoxy and put a piece of flat plastic under there to build the Bondo on. Worked great till my buddy Oke was like "O, so this is where the Bondo is?" while plunging his finger on the spot. POP. The Bondo plug popped right out. Now I have a little piece of duct tape covering the hole until I get un-lazy (this weekend) and I pull off the trunk and redo it.

i was thinking of shoving something into the small holes, just below level with the lid, and bondo-ing over them, or i might cut out all the metal framing on the back and do it properly, and save some weight. as long as no one sit on the lid, it will be ok without supports-Enzo

Weld in some backing and Bondo the top side.

OR, do it RIGHT and have it leaded.

Perhaps you could enlighten us on this leading process, Hitman? I've heard of it and even seed it or something like it done oh shows like American Hot Rod but its only for the smallest of hole right? Its not meant for large holes, such as shaving the antenna right?

yeah I was gonna mention leading...

it's only good for the smaller stuff really, as lead is kinda heavy.

I think with the antennae they use body filler most of the time or perhaps tac in a small peice of sheet metal.

I really can't remember the leading process now....for some reason I keep thinking it's kinda like soidering..

^ James is right on the money.

A real pro would tack weld a piece in the hole, grind, and lead the small remaining holes.

When i did the bodywork on my '68, I tried to use NO Bondo. TONS of small holes from all the trim and emblems I removed...

p.s. You can do it from the top if you weld a little "handle" (piece of wire) on your filler piece, then grind it off.
