ok a lil history.

i decided to start a cover band out of boredom about 2 years ago and we ended up playing 3 gigs, one paid and the other 2 were for benifits. the bass player started a family and a 2nd job and i didnt want to continue the band because half of the songs he sang, other half were mine. now i HATE the normal cover songs you hear at a bar like the 70's rock, stupid brown eyed girl, tragically hip, none of that. we covered jeremy, bad girlfriend, different stuff.

fast forward to 2 days ago...

(8 month break)

drummer calls me up and found a bass player and a guitarist (which i was trying to find so i can do vocals 100%) and wants to start up the band again. i need some ideas on what stuff would work well at a bar. heres a list ive been working on the past few days.

somebody to shove - soul asylum

homecoming queen - hinder

santa monica - theory of a deadman

addicted - saving abel

bad girlfriend - theory of a deadman

silent lucidity - queensryche

inside out - eve 6

by the way - red hot chili peppers

ratt - round and round

ratt - lay it down

fall out boy - sugar were going down swinging

motley crue - saints of los angeles

cheap trick - surrender

bruce springstien - im going down

duran duran - hungry like the wolf

dirty little secret - all american rejects

incubus - wish you were here

paralyzer - finger 11

fuel - shimmer

goo goo dolls - long way down

lit - my own worst enemy

billy talent - try honesty

the outfield - i dont wanna lose your love tonight

u2 - pride

rev theory - hell yea

poison - fallen angel

saliva - always

drowning pool - let the bodies hit the floor

foo fighters - everlong

just a start but i need more ideas, im running dry, and thats after axeing about 50 songs that were in our old set list.

I respect that you want to play music that you like and something that isn't always played at a bar by other cover bands.

You can play those other songs, but don't base your gig around it. Play the normal crap everyone wants to hear, and throw in those other songs, 4-5 each set.

I've always been a fan of the first Slash's Snake Pit album.

Beggars and Hangers' On.

And Neither Can I.

Both, very solid songs with some great blues based riffs.

If you can sing like that guy (can't remember his name), wow.

I think that any ozzie song would go over well. Maybe a little crazy train? Or something a little less played, Bark at the moon. Very good song.

Use Pandora - put in an artist like Eddie Money or Bon Jovi and see the songs is spits out....many of them would be good bar songs.

Skip anything by Ozzy. No one can sound like him, and even if they do, it don't seem to work.

Same with Sandman, Santeria and Sweet Home Alabama.

Skip Cinderella, same reason. Keifer's voice is one in a million.

Vocal-wise, Watermelon's list is bleh... No offense, but those are all lame from a vocal standpoint.

If you can pull it off, anything by Skid Row will go over well.

Scarborough Fair (the way Queensryche did it) is awesome... Skip Lucidity, it's tired and boring unless you do something special with it.

Lose Your Love is a great vocal track... Wish I could get up that high...

How about theory of a deadman's "All or Nothing" (cool tune), or Bon Jovi's "Never Say Goodbye"?

I'm jealous - I've always wanted to take voice lessons. Always said if I could sing like Sebastian Bach, I'd have no stress in my life.

ha skid row is IMPOSSIBLE vocally, same with bon jovi, they are just GREAT singers. gonna take a different route and do originals for the time being, playing other peoples stuff becomes pretty lame after a while. bar bands are ok to watch sometimes, but to be in one becomes sooooooooo exhausting.

I dunno, I think JBJ can be followed with a little practice - He's got some cues that are kinda easy to pick up on and replicate, and not a ton of range... But SB just rips.

To do Bon Jovi correctly, you need a good vocalist that can do the harmonies like Jon and Ritchie. Otherwise, the song falls flat.

My band does several Bon Jovi tunes.

The best part of a cover band is that you don't have to sound exactly like the singer of the original song. Find a way to make it your own and kill it.

Another good song would be Running Wild by Airbourne.

Priest's You've Got Another Thing Comming or Breakin The Law are always fan favorites.

Hell, pull out Billy Idol's Rebel Yell.

We did that song a few months ago and found out that about 15 people in our regular crowd love that song. It went over EXTREMELY well.

i think we may do covers down the road and im keeping this thread on file for ideas. i just want a good set when we do decide to play out locally that it will go over well. i get annoyed easily when i hear all the local bands trying to play brown eyed girl better than the previous band the weekend before, or gimmie 3 steps...pft.

aint talking bout love-van halen... i heard that on the radio today i think that would rock hard, and the parts didnt seem "too" difficult.

i love van halen, both singers

rebel yell is a good one too, and i was actually thinking of living after midnight as far as priest goes... run to the hills from maiden would be intense but that is also high up on the vocal difficulty scale.

How good is your drummer? If he's on par with semi-pro/highly skilled amateur, then:

Glass prison - Dream Theater (the first two or so minutes of this song are are metal at it's finest).http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8h81PggfE8I

The Night and the Silent Water - Opethhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kD4u3TclUSs

Sinners Defeat - Mors Principium Est.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BwwfgstoSlQ

And if you want a guilty pleasure song, there is always Ordinary World by Duran Duran.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YaTL6VAr2RY

I swear, one of the coolest moments EVER in motion picture history was in Layer Cake when Morty beat down Freddy in that cafe while Ordinary World was playing.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v...lated

ordinary world! thank you. i had that on file on memory a LONG time ago, completely forgot about it. love duran duran, save a prayer is probably my favorite song by them. ive been getting back to the basics on what i grew up with to try to find some inspriation for writing some new stuff. being 28, i think i grew up in a great time period of the mid 80's to the mid 90's, there is so much greatness. the only good band i admire today as far as "new" is billy talent, but they have been around for 10+ years so i wouldnt really consider them new either.

the drummer is my brother and he is getting better, he is still learning his chops so but he is very dedicated and practices 2-3 hours a day, it should turn out to be a good time. ill post some pics of my equipment soon, i just spent 600 bux on a pa system

I saw L.O.A. open up for Machine Head and Megadeth in San Diego in 97. Great band.
