I have an RB20 motor on a stand right now. Is there a way to keep the assembly from rotating to get the crank pulley off? I don't have air tools, just a big breaker bar and 27mm socket.

Also, how do I get the head off to replace the gasket and inspect things a bit. The motor has a lot of miles on it so I want to make sure it will run ok with my intended power goals.

You can't keep it from moving unless you have a flywheel on there. The only other way I can think of is with an impact.

The head.. I can't help you there. I haven't taken mine apart yet so I dunno.

Have a quesntion: What type of stand are you using? My rb25 looks like it will tip over on a stand my freind has.

As for the head take a look the RB26 diagram: http://home.earthlink.net/~4rc4ne/rb26head.JPG

Rb20DET may be the same, I know the rb25 is. Those hex bolts are below the cams.

Make sure on the head that you get all of those little pesky 8mm bolts out of the 4 corners. You will also need a 10mm hex for the 12? bolts in the head.

Thanks for the pic. I figured it was the hex bolts. Can I get the head off without taking the timing belt off, I can't get the crank pully off.?

Please excuse my n00bness, but how I read the torque specs?

Loosen the tensioner you should be able to slide it off. Those torque specs are in Nm you need to convert it to ft-lbs. HOWEVER! I do not know if those are the same as the RB20.

I can't find a tensioner to pull the timing belt. I can't get the lower belt cover off without taking off the crank pulley. :(

Anyone know how to secure the flywheel so I can get the crank pulley off?

Well, if the engine is in the car, put it in gear and wrench on it with a 27mm socket. Otherwise, there are bolt hols on the flywheel where the clutch and pressure plate bolt on. If you attach two bolts from the engine stand into the flywheel and the other two on a stationary part of the engine (where the bell housing bolts in) you should be able to turn it then.

Why don't we have a sticky that has all the wiring diagrams, service manuals, ecu pinouts, etc that everyone has collected? they are all around, but it takes some searching to find everything.

Got the crank pulley and heads off. Took the oil pan off and put a 2"x6" board under the crank to keep it from moving. :)

The motor has a lot of miles. The timing belt looked great, no wear at all, I think it was replaced not too long ago. The valves, cams, and piston tops show no sign of abnormalities.

Now with my goal of at least 300whp, what should I be looking at? I'll be getting an upgraded headgasket and head studs. Anything else I should be doing?
