The other day I stopped by Gino's Pizza for a quick bite, parked in front of it...I step in and noticed she was ON.

Tonight, I was filling up and half way I noticed it and turned her off. Obviously, they ask you to turn off your engine for safety reasons but is this harmful to cars?

Am I alone on this?

I can't lie bro. I mistakenly left my car on for an entire day.

This was about 7 years ago though...old school Altima back then.

My normal routine, back at my first job, was to park in this shopping mall parking lot, then make a mad dash across the street to the subway station, and take the subway the rest of the way to work.

Well, I did this for 8-years. Saved 8-yeras of paying for subway parking.

The only trick was the shopping mall had security cars that drove around and put warnings on your car.

So, my strategy was to park close to the Bob's Big Boy, make it look like I was going to get my grub on, then make the dash to the subway. You can't just part directly accross the street from the subway, you gotta have a plan--I had to slip under the radar. Sometimes, I'd part on the opposite side of the mall, walk through the mall, then brake across the street...ah...I was young then...

Anyway, I was so worried about getting caught one day, I broke for the subway, and left the car running.

I went to work, worked from 9-5. At the end of the day, I realized I didn't have my freakn keys...oh uh. Looked in the office...nothing. I always carry a spare car key in my wallet...hah...so I was at least good to drive home. The rest of the keys, well, I would have to get duplicates and getting in the crib was another story.

So, I get to the car. It was fairly new, so, the sound was barely noticeable.

I just stood there with my mouth open, as the door was not locked, and the damn engine was still running.

Talking about easy work for a car jacker?

All luck, the car was still there.

So yeah, I feel your pain man. I left that job, so no more sneakn to the subway.

Luckily I had enough gas!

Wait, so your just forgetting to press the button to turn it off? Its just so smooth and quiet you don't realize its still on Beats me, I've never my car running because I forgot it was. Sounds like you have your mind on other things and your just forgetting.

As for filling up with the engine running. Should be fine, people do it all the time. I wouldn't make a habit of it.

Oops, but no there is really no real safety issue leaving you car on while filling it, of course you do run a slighter risk of a gas fire but its about the same as static electricity (NOT CELL PHONES!!!!, THE NEVER HAVE AND NEVER WILL CAUSE A GAS PUMP FIRE!!!!) getting in and out of the car...its a good practice to turn your engine off, but as you know 4 feet of snow and 0 degrees F screw it I lock the latch under the handle and get back in the warm car.

Leaving your engine running while refueling may not damage the engine - but it may cause your check engine light to come on. That's reason alone not to make that a habit.
