Coupe/Roadster/What?

It seems the english refer to cars like the Vauxhall Tigra and Mercedes SLK as coupes, but I thought a coupe had to have a fixed hard top and two rear seats???

The Tigra and SLK are strictly two-seaters with convertible tops, so doesnt that make them roadsters? Perhaps what I thought was correct is entirely wrong.

What defines a coupe and what defines a roadster?

I'm with you I though coupes were 2x2 hardtops, and roadsters were 2 seaters.

So it seems that a coupe is something that could be convertable or hardtop, but a roadster is only a convertable.....

I used to be confuse dabout the different terminology used for a 4 door car with or without door pillars.
