I've done none of the above. I guess some engines take longer for the rings to seat? With 38.2k miles my oil consumption went from 1000mi/qt when new to about 2500 mi per quart now. Anyone who drives should check their oil, tires and other fluids weekly. Anyone who allows an engine to run out of oil & or gasoline should not be driving. Just my opinion!6spdmax wrote:This has been a very interesting post for me to read. I've searched on some maxima-specific forums. Seems alot of people who buy a vehicle with the VQ35 the 6spd MT plan to DRIVE their cars. This causes oil to be sucked into the intake manifold. Just wondered if anyone who's posted here has had any luck with replacing the PCV valve or installing an oil catch can.
That kind of sucks but you bought the car at 87k so who knows what kind of care the vehicle received when new? If I were you I would not be using such expensive oil. I would experiment with 10w-40 or 15w-50 instead of 5w-30 to see if either of those oils make a difference? I buy whatever oil is on sale usually between $.79 & $.99 cents per quart usually Pennzoil or Quaker State at my local Pep Boys. I change oil & filter every 3k to 3.5k miles so there is no need to spend over $2 to $6 per quart.6spdmax wrote:I guess if my rings have not seated by now, they never will. 90K mi., and using 2 qts per 1600 mi. I bought the car with 87K mi, and I love it except for the oil consumption. Unless there's an easy fix, I'll probably just continue checking the oil at every fill up, and switch from Pennzoil Platinum full synthetic, which the previous owner used, and costs $5.78/qt, to Kendall synthetic blend, which is $2.28/qt.
The car has always had 10w30 in it. I thought about some 20w50, but thought that might be a little too thick with winter coming. I may start running some Lucas oil treatment through it. I need to start checking the sales at Pepboys though, because 99c is pretty cheap. I almost always keep my rpms above 2K, I almost never shift above 5K rpm, and most of the time I shift around 3K rpm. I don't notice any smoke when starting up in the morning and haven't noticed any during hard acceleration. My plan is just to keep keep adding oil as needed, and run seafoam through the oil and gas every other oil change. Hopefully I can get another 87K miles out of this engine.telcoman wrote:

I also have a question for you. At what RPM's do you usually shift?
I am an old farht who's been driving stick shift vehicles for over 40 years. I rarely shift over 3k RPM unless there is some A#&@e in my way. I wonder if high RPMs are pushing oil out past your rings?

My wife drives it and doesn't abuse it. We had to check the oil every 100 miles at the dealer that was 40 minutes away. There is absolutely a problem with the 350z 6 speed. You don't buy a brand new car so you can test it every 1000 miles. You do that to an used car with a lot of miles on it. You obviously don't understand what he is talking about. You sound like a guy that likes running his mouth and doesn't have a clue.

Welcome to NICO but lets be nice. Q45 does know what he is talking about. There are many strong opinions as well as considerable age differences between the many posts. I happen to be one of the old farhts who has been driving over 40 years. There are some engines that use oil & some do not but I can tell you from my experience you & everyone else should be checking not only their oil but other fluids and tire pressure weekly.
Failure to do preventive vehicle checks and simple maintenance can come back to bite you in the butt with lots of aggrevation as well.
Just my opinion
