Not right now. I don't think right now. :ohno: No I just caught a mention of a potential Coup d'Etat plot against Roosevelt that I had never heard about before. This is the first link I followed. I'm going to look into this some more; it's very interesting. As a former Marine I'm a little embarassed I did not know about this chapter of General Butler's life, especially considering I work on a base that bears his name! :slap:

There's an interesting new book about how we almost came out of the Civil War with a military dictator. Then General McClellan had the gumption to lose a key battle (the Battle of Anteitam was the North on the defensive, outnumbering Southern forces, and considered a draw), and subsequently hand some demands to President Lincoln, who promptly spat on the demands and issued the Emancipation Proclamation in spite of him.

Its my understanding that upon Washington's last term ending, he basically had the full faith and backing of the military to do whatever he pleased, whether stepping down, or carrying on as a more permanent leader. He touches on that notion a bit in his farewell address, which by the way is a fantastic read, and he recognizes that it is his responsibility to hand over the reigns so that this republic could fulfill its destiny.
