I detest the Pelosi and Reed types, but I can't say the idea of Boener running the show gives me any more confidence.

It's been said all along that Republicans will make gains, but I don't know how big their gains will be.

My big worry is that people are so busy looking at who they're throwing out that they're not paying much attention to who they're throwing in. I don't think the American public is going to be any happier after this election, and I fear that rash decision-making (we've done that a lot, lately, haven't we?) will only serve to make them less happy.

My concern is having Republicans gain ground and then do the exact same crap the Dems are doing and the GOP did under Bush.

I agree with that sentiment completely, but I'd tack on "or worse" at the end.

Potentially "or worse" is a possibility.

To discount it puts way too little faith in the types of people who want to get elected to office badly enough to have done so.

Douglas Adams wrote, "Anybody who is capable of getting themselves made President should on no account be allowed to do the job." While that's a perfectly impractical way of running (or not running) a government, I think there's merit in the sentiment that we ought to be looking close at the people who are so keen on replacing the Devil We Know.

A politician is a politician. They will usually say to your face what you want to hear and then do behind your back what they want to do, what will increase their chances of staying elected or what makes them the most money in the long run. Remember, politicians usually have some form of law degree which makes them some of the....meh, I won't go there :)

I define myself as a fiscal "moderate" with conservative tendencies. I don't mind having social programs as long as they are paid for, are giving a "hand up", and not a constant drain. In general, social programs utilize excess funding after "all bills are paid". I want people in office who will do what they need to do, as "unpopular" to some as it may be, to get this country back on the right financial track. We are not going to be able to do that with progressives, either GOP or DEM, in office.

Why GOP or Dem? Independent and third party voter rolls are swelling and it's time to throw the bums out. You're right in your assessment of politicians. Anyone who thinks Boehner or Cantor gives a darn about anyone but themselves, their party and their rich cronies is sadly mistaken. They have no concern at all for America as a country or the majority of American citizens.

The way I see it, you have the choice to get crapped on by a donkey, crapped on by an elephant, or take a chance on making your vote count as a positive for a change. Pretty much the worst that can happen is you get crapped on again, but this time it would be by some new animal. At least it would send a big-time message to the two major parties.

My internalized positions on economic policies are right there with you, Aud (I might just be a bit more willing to let that "paid for" bit slide during economic troubles).

And I see these economic troubles as temporary - getting back on financial track is only part of the equation. These people we're electing are going to have a say in a great many issues, and I think we're going to have problems if we stay with this "one issue on our mind at a time" approach.

They arent supposed to. Surely they arent supposed to have their OWN interests at heart, but they arent supposed to have THE MAJORITY's interests at heart either. They are supposed to have the interest of their constituents at heart. But then thats all warm fuzzy theory right?

A small "let it slide" in tough times when we are not deficit spending and going further in a hole is one thing, what the Gov is doing today is something completely else that we simply will never be able to sustain. We would not have near the problems today if politicians had kept their hands to themselves.

Being "fiscal" is the one reason I like Palin as her track record shows she may make the tough decisions that others won't. I can deal with the rest of her viewpoints as long as the country gets back on track financially.

I refuse to allow myself to be a "single-issue" voter. Besides, Palin's conservatism too often only happened when someone exposed what was going on (example, taking the money for the bridge to nowhere). I see Palin as another person who got into politics and discovered that it was a good route to a personal financial gravy train.

On the subject of the upcoming elections I find this article very disturbing. It demonstrates just how much voters (including the majority of people here) have been brainwashed by the propaganda of the Democrats and Republicans.

Something I've always wondered (and maybe one of you wants to create a new thread on it).... Where the HELL does all the money come from?

BO has been a public servant for how long? And he did what before? Yet he's got MILLIONS. How about Clinton? MILLIONS. Bush? Never mind - Oil. But seriously, where do they get the wealth? Not ALL of their campaign is publicly-funded or through contributions...

An interesting read, thanks! I think the following final line says a lot:

It is no wonder that Independents now outnumber both Democrats and Republicans

Do you have a politician black parent from Africa and a white Christian mother from the US? That's the start of it all ;)

Queue Steve Martin from The Jerk: "I was born a poor black child. I remember the days, sittin' on the porch with my family, singin' and dancin' down in Mississippi... "

I should write a pop-up book. I will title a chapter "how to erode civil liberty covertly" When you open that page a fist will pop up.
