I can see your pictures now that you've uploaded them to the internet. I will say, they don't look like the picture that Papasmurf gave you. The one with the JWT cams drawn. I also can't see the other parts of the engine to determine if you are at TDC for piston 1. I see you got this engine from someone else who rebuilt it. Do they have any liability for the work done and can you have them check it? What you can do, before tearing stuff down again is either have them check it or check it yourself. How? Use the FSM. By the way, they definitely should have used the FSM for a rebuild, if they didn't, wow, I don't know what they might or might not have done. Anyway, here is a link to the FSM (which you should download and have on your computer at home):

Now that just goes to all years and you'll have to pick one. Maybe you can tell us what year the engine and ECU are for what you're installing. We'd be able to help a bit more. Obviously an FSM for the 1989 240sx won't have any DOHC information in it. The EM chapter is where you want to look.

Here's a link that may work for your engine:

Yes the engine was rebuilt from a guy that apparently knew his stuff. I wasnt the one thst had it rebuilt i bought it already rebuilt. And yes i was at TDC notch 2 from the top on the crank and piston all the way up at 1st cylinder. So the pics are how my cams and gears are set at TDC. So i should go ahead and re set the cams and gears to the JWT picture and see if that helps? I was just wanting to know if my gears and cams being off like that if it would cause my car not to start it only turns over. Thank you very much for helping i am so ready to get thiss car going. Thank you again!!!!

One, I'm the wrong guy for this. I hope someone else will chime in. Someone with timing experience. I could do it, but I have never done it. I'd need the engine in front of me and the FSM, but I don't have either. I'm here for moral support! :bigthumb:

Two, I wouldn't do timing things using a picture found online (even if it is JWT), I would only do it by the FSM. Yes, I commented based on pictures. It's the information I had at hand and I don't have the experience to know different. I flipped through the FSM some and didn't find a similar picture to recommend.

Three, here's another write-up with some nice pictures. I think this thread paired with the FSM should get you going on either checking or changing things. By the way, in these pictures, timing seems pretty much the same as you have in your pictures. So, again, I'm not sure about comparing to the JWT picture. Maybe you are set to the correct cam and chain locations.

Wishing you great luck with getting your engine going. It's all rebuilt with new parts right? So, I hope it runs soon. It should pull strong and reliable and you'll be happy then. :)

Update anyone following this. After work today i just grit my teeth and dove into re setting the cams and gears. To my knowledge they are correct and fixed from where they were before. Maybe this will fix my problem but we will see this weekend. I will upload a few pics of them and if you guys see any thing wrong with them let me know. Thanks guys as always!

Just noticed my idler gear (the big one in between the two cam gears for lower timing) is off the notch is in the wrong spot. Please tell me i dont have to take the lower timing chain off and fix it. Will it be ok where it is at? I hope i dont have to fix this but i have a feeling im going to have to take everything off the front of the engine and re set the lower timing. Please if anyone knows if i csn leave it how it is and run it let me know.
