Hey,I was wondering if an experienced mechanic could fix a sr20 motor? I need to get my motor checked out and Im not sure if a regular mechanic could look at it, or should I try to find someone local who knows about sr20s?

Thanks

If you can, find someone who can specifically work on sr's...that would be best. A reasonably god mechanic that you trust should know how to work on it though. It is not insanely complex and bears many similarities to something like a eclipse gsx or any other 4 cylinder turbo. Just be sure to tell them that it is not the stock motor, and that you can find out the parts you need...ie stock gaskets and oil filters etc. will not work on it

the SR20 is a motor just like any other motor. The only thing that you have to worry about is that the water pump and valve cover gasket have to be imported from japan. just remember to tell them that when you take it in, but otherwise, i don't see why any mechanic couldn't work on the motor

Another thing you have to look out for in a mechanic is whether he knows how to deal with direct coil ignition, because some just get lost when they do not see a distributor.

No, no, no.....The headlight fluid was fazed out a long time ago, they only use the fluid for the blinkers now.

my advice is to fix it yourself if you can. mechanics used to break lug nuts on my car before, now i won't let anyone touch it. ill be damn if i let some chimp in a suit touch my sr. Find a good mechanic to help you out if you need to. do reserch ie. ask around a lot.

just to check on that gasket deal, it is a Japan only gasket like i though. i know that the SCC guys are wrong a lot of times, but Coleman's been fairly accurate on the nissan stuff. HT sells the gaskets as does Spriso

btw, my old tempo's headlight fluid was so black when we drained it. the filter hadn't been changed for a year i think :D

Honestly, when I first got my 240, i had never changed oil before. I pulled my KA with my dads help, and we installed it together. I can now say i know how my car works. The first time i changed oil was on my sr ahha. Anyway, my suggestion to you is, work on your car yourself as much as possible. If you can't (ie for space reasons) then talk to other car enthusiasts and see if they can either recommend someone or help you themselves.
