Hi,
I have an 08 Rogue.. Local shop said rear shocks are leaking and recommend replacing and they also recommend replacing the drive belt.
They quoted price of like $398 for the rear shocks and like $160 for the drive belt.

That seems waaay high.
What do you guys think?

the shocks on this car are not readily available. they might simply be passing along the cost onto you.

the belt shouldn't be more than $75-$100 to replace. its like $30 at the dealer, and a 15min job

You can get rear shocks from Amazon

You can install those yourself or buy and have the shop install them for you. Call and ask them how much the labor is to replace the shocks.

I'd go to the junk yard and pry the shocks off another Rogue. They're practically free if you throw them over the fence and install them yourself. If you don't have the tools, might as well buy the tools and change the belt & shocks yourself to save you a few Benjamin Franklins. Not only do you save money, you get tools. NICOClub has a DIY thread that will walk you through the simple maintenance.

I am handy but only up to a certain point. But based on your feedback, i will shop around the price a bit more.

The book price to replace both rear shock absorbers on a 2008 AWD Rogue is 1.0 hours.
The book price to replace the drive belt on a 2008 AWD Rogue is 0.8 hours.

Therefore, you should be paying no more than 1.8 (or 2.0 depending on if they round) hours of labour on this job.

Ask them what their labour rate is and go from there. Remember when looking at the price you HAVE to break out parts and labour. Shops I have visited in my area range from $160/hr to $90/hr. This alone shows that you may find a wide variance in price, but it's more because of their hourly rate.

Above all else, find a shop you are comfortable dealing with. Your peace of mind is worth something and you need to be confident in their abilities, otherwise you will be looking for problems to blame them with rather than enjoying your vehicle.

FYI - if you are "handy" with a car, you may really want to look at doing these repairs yourself. They are two of the more simple repairs and you might find yourself spending more time getting all your tools ready than actually doing the work.

You can find shocks and belts at Rockauto. Usually their prices are very competitive.
