This guy is willing to sell me a 1990 240sx for $1100. The only thing wrong with it is that it has a blown head gasket. How much would it cost if I just bought another head gasket and had like a mechanic fix it or something?

Probably around $1000

Labor is expensive.

If there is no other damage you can get parts for like $160 and diy.

Dang $1000? The guy said it's located on the exterior of the engine so it shouldn't be that much to fix if I buy the head gasket set myself.

I did the headgasket on my 89 like 3 times haha, paid $1200 and it was blown to begin with, so it's basically the same situation.. except my head ended up being warped. It's not expensive, like $50 for a felpro headgasket, plus maybe some other random gaskets, like intake manifold and exhaust manifold gaskets. do it yourself. it will help you get you to know your car at least..

trust me, you'll want to know what's going on under your hood, a 20 year old car is going to have problems, and it's not fun paying other people to work on your car.. you have no idea what shortcuts they're taking and such.. it's nice to know exactly what to do when something goes wrong.

word. blew my hg back in college. I picked one up for ~$100 (along with a few of the other ones), a couple afternoons later, a trip to the machine shop to deck the head, and I'm good as new.

All in all, if it's clean and rust free, have him subtract the parts cost for a new head gasket and your time (~$200). Like i240sx said, probably $8-900.

lolz!

its located between the head and the block.. since you didnt know where the headgasket was i wouldnt suggest that you do it yourself.

Well being relatively new to cars of course I didn't know where it was. And just because I didn't know where it was doesn't mean I can't learn to. I do have a family that's basically a family of mechanics, so they can teach me.

A head gasket is a big job. Make sure you have someone knowledgeable with you to help you out, or you'll be in trouble.
