I had my 94 J30 Infiniti Smog Checked, it failed. The guy told me that I have a fuel leak, and I need one of the fuel injectors fixed. Anyone have an idea what this will cost me to fix or replace? I can't do it myself.

Thanks,

Robert

It sort of depends on which one it is. If its right in the front, it will be easier than trying to get a bunch of junk out of the way at the back of the engine.

If you use a used fuel injector (or just replace the whole rail with one from a junk yard), figure about 250 bucks or so. If you go new, probably around 350.

You can replace most of them by using a dremmel and shaving (very carefully) small pieces of the intake manifold so you can have access to the injector cap screws. This is way better than removing the entire IM in my opinion.

You most likely just need to replace the O-ring seal between the manifold and the injector body. Given the 21 year age of the vehicle, the O-rings are drying out. Cheap fix try, if it doesn't cure the problem, then invest in a new injector [which will likely come with a new O-ring].

Does the car run rough or have a strong fuel smell out the tail pipe (along with white smoke)? If an o-ring was bad, you would have white smoke constantly coming out of the tail pipe due to the mass of fuel. The car would also be sluggish. I would check the timing of the engine first. My friend in his TT Z32 failed smog because his timing was at 20BTDC instead of 15BTDC. I put it back to 15BTDC and it passed.

You can OHM check the injectors to see if there is a bad one.

You can also pull the spark plugs and see if a certain cylinder is running rich.

Make sure you are using OEM plugs only. PN# PFR6B-11B

The VG30DE is pretty picky on what plugs it uses and its timing. Plus doing these tests would be cheaper than buying a new injector and attempting to replace it. DO NOT take it to the dealership. They will charge you more than the car is worth to replace it. Last quote I had 4 years ago was $3400 at Infiniti stealership to replace all 6 injectors. I did it myself and bought the injectors from Z1 Motorsports because their injectors come with the o-rings. OEM is JECS and 270cc. DO NOT buy any other brand. It will not be the same quality and will prematurely fail.

There is no point in him just replacing an injector blindly without doing some preliminary tests. He would notice if an injector was bad or leaking. I pinched an o-ring on one of my new injectors and it physically ran like crap. If it runs normally but just does not pass smog, it could simply be a regular maintenance item such as spark plugs and to check timing.
