I was out messing with the car and wanted to check the ECU to pull the codes. I have a 62 ECU and got it turned around and found the screw but didnt really want to proceed without getting some opinions. Do I start the car while pulling the codes?? I read where one guy said to unhook the battery?? That didnt make sense. Just looking for the exact procedure for a 62. Thanks

Turn the screw to it's diagnostic mode (which is full counter clockwise IIRC) and turn the car to "on". You don't need to start it. Then count the flashes. The flashes with a pause between each will be the tens digit, and the ones that flash quickly will be the ones digit.

Do a search of the site to find the code list.

I tried that but it seems that the screw never seems to stop. How many times should I be able to turn it?? Maybe I didnt go far enough?? Just wondering. Thanks for the reply Bart, you actually helped me thru a couple pf things in the past. I have another question as well. I took my charge pipe of on the turbo side and there was oil on the inside of the pipe, turbo seal correct?? Just making sure so I dont spend money on something else. Thanks

i know you were asking Bart, but oil in the pipes is ok for turbo cars. If your turbo doesnt smoke and you can boost it no problem id say your fine.

Even a better response. I have been somewhat paraniod of this motor since I got the car. The swap was already done when I got it and you can never rely on someone elses work. This is the same guy who used the wrong dipstick in the SR (as you can read about in my previous post yesterday). So now I am just checking and doucle checking everything. Thanks guys

A little blow by is normal. A bad turbo seal will cause the oil to pool in the charge pipes

As for the diagnostic mode screw, it should be a half turn IIRC.

Just tried to pull the codes again and the screw still will not stop turning. I then turned the car to on and started turning to see if at some point I did get some codes and nothing. Do these screws break sometimes?? Just wondering if I should get a new ECU.

dont just keep turning the screw......you only turn it like a half turn i think . I think there is a sticker that says diagnostics mode or somthin. just turn it to that and go from there

I read somewhere that the little screw control idle. I just got the ECU cinched down and now the car is idling higher than it was. Could this be the case?? I got the car to settle down by pulling a little fuel out of it at idle?? I just wanted to make sure that this wont mess things up worst to adjust the screw and try to find the spot where it was previously. Just wondering

It does control idle but if you turn it to a certain point it should be in diagnostics mode or somthin like that, and I don't know if you should try to mess with it more I guess if you are just turn it down and not up lol.

I donno man, I just checked mine and got a 55 so that's good.

It took me a while though to get the light to come on, I almost gave up then I remembered I have a fuel cut off and decided to turn it on, blamo the light starts flashin, but it started flashing when it was turned all the way down. When I turned it clockwise the light turns off, when I put it back to where it always is, it flahses, strange to me.

That's exactly how it's supposed to be.
