Hi, all.

I am now confused since I did a search and saw a number of guesses for the correctr mfg date limit on the chain guide issue.

What is the definitive date limit? I.e., after which, this is not a problem? My boss has a 1993 Q45a and wanted to know if he was really in trouble or not ...

truth is no one knows.Professor Mike once got hold of teh factory and posted a VIN ( still in our archives somewhere.

Anotehr number is production after 7/92, when teh en parts came out, but wer are pretty sure old parts were used up after that.

Hmmm. So, if the mfg date (on the pillar, I assume) is after 7/92, then the guides are believed to be the new ones?

Is there a way to check out the condition of the guides without "going for it"? I.e., a cheaper way to tell without opening up too much of the engine?

I will be experimenting with a borescope in about a month or so. I'll be sure to post back how the procedure worked...or didn't.

BTW, my Q's a 93 with a build date of 9/92, so this should be a real test of the "7/92, updated parts" theory.

We have tried borescopes since 1995 nothing works except pulling the front cover. To even use a borescope you must pull the driverside valve cover.

Actually a good thing to change the oil chain or at least replace the oil chain fixed guides [remove slack from chain]........even on later year model with over 120k on them. Based on what we have seen in earlier models.........just like budgeting for a timing belt on other V8.

Again. IMO, it is FOOLISH to assume your guides are new unless you have a 94+ Q45. As Dennis said, pulling the covers is the only way to tell. I wouldn't take a chance of not pulling them with a treasure as valuable as a Q. Think how horrible it would be if your engine blew because you thought 9/92 was a date where the new guides were 'certain' to be there.

Don't get me wrong....I'm still going to verify 100%, one way or another that my guides are correct or not.

If there's one thing I've learned it's that if you want to know something for sure....do it yourself. It's the only way to be 100%.(Just call me a doubting Thomas :) )

At this moment I'm replacing the alternator.....fun. :(

Ouch, that is no fun. BTW, the only reason I know I have new guides is because they were replaced by the factory at 99,986 miles with my dad's 7year/100k warranty. It is documented by Infiniti and my mechanic opened the covers for me so we could check just to be sure.

We just checked my boss's Q.. It was manufactured in December 1992, so ... he remains uncertain as to whether to spend the money to check it or not.

Argh!

I'm gonna step off the curb here...a Dec. 92 date should mean this is a 93 model car, right? Chain guides were not updated till 94 model year....with some small mystery attached to the issue as to whether really late 93 cars might have the fix and worse, that really early 94 cars might NOT have the fix. that time line has never really been defined. My diagnosis is.....he's got the bad guides. Q45 Tech where are you, I think I'm right, but not 100% If you want the definitive answer call information for T3 in Atlanta.

He should check regardless, but dec 92 is pretty late production for a 93.

The 94 model was an early introduction one and production of 94's started pretty early in 93 .

Someone said the last 93's and the first 94's may have been made concurrently for a few weeks as one line switched production before the other.

94's are safe and I think the very last few weeks of 93 production should be safe as well.Either way rule of thumb:On a 93 still check, if its very late production just not as urgently.

The model years of '93 and '94 production did overlap. My '93 was made 2/93. Some '94s were listed as prod. about that time. I heard guides were on a phaseout of plastic and phase in of metal. So depending what was "on the shelf" a 93 may have metal and a 94 may have plastic. So check or roll the dice.
