As I've been searching for a core engine to have rebuilt I've ran into a bit of a dilemma. I need to know how difficult it would be to transplant the pullies, brackets, wiring, etc off of a non TCS, non active Q onto my TCS and active Q. Any ideas on the difficulty? May they just bolt on?

The engine I'm looking at is a 94' w/ 156k miles on it but is EXTREMELY inexpensive.

Corey :)

Lots cheaper just to buy a low-mileage pullout engine.

Rebuilding a VH45DE is cost-prohibitive.... Very few machine shops can match the factory tolerances, and parts for the internal assemblies are big bucks.

I know what you're saying Greg, but I have plans to have the motor rebuilt and built up with higher compression pistons, better piston rings and a few other goodies (still deciding what else I'd like to do and how much I'd like to spend). I'm getting a well respected shop in MA to build it up. They have a large machine shop and build hundreds of American (and even a few jap) V8s each year. After the build up the engine will reliably be able to sustain 500hp and 600hp intermittently. Final cost should be under $1500 core included.

You've gotten quotes already? At $30/hr, which is reasonable if not cheap, that equates to 50 shop hours, which is close to what I would expect them to spend on such a project. Doesn't include parts though. All tolerances can be met...for a price.A good machinist is part skilled craftsman, part engineer, and part artist. The better ones never cease to amaze me with what they can do, how they can feel their machines and adjust things on the fly based on experience, getting that extra .00x" of tolerance. The bad ones also never cease to amaze me, but for entirely different reasons. They are routinely referred to specification MIL-TFP-41C

Hahaha.

The shop I'm getting to do this for me is a shop I've only heard good things about. They've worked on the VH45DE before, which is how I found them.

He quoted me $1200 depending on engine condition when it arrives. That doesn't include honing/boring the cylinders or other symptoms of excessive wear.

Price head gaskets, custom rods, rings, pistons, new valves and valve springs, then the bearings.

I come up with $5,000 in parts alone to handle 600 HP.http://www.carrilloind.com/03bro3.pdf

Rebuilding an engine to last 100,000 miles is quite different from 12,000 miles 12 months.

Mini. If the enigne is being rebuilt, everything s gotta come off anyway, so in theory it shouldnt take any extra work... but you should get the injecotrs tested, and all that fun stuff with engine r/r.

I think that youll be better off with a takeout.

Cylinders shouldn't need honing, and I can't imagine much wear in a VH. No offense, but if they've woked on VH's before, they wouldn't have said anythng about "symptoms of excessive wear".

Show me a Q that burns oil under 200K miles and I'll show you a car that's had very few oil/filter changes.

Mine is indistinguishable from new internally on all wear surfaces after 110K miles. Rings are probably the only thing that show any change at the mileage you're at (unless the engine was abused).

Agreed with hitman.. If it was that bad, you most likely want to get a whole new engine anyway.....
