So I'm about to install a metal cometic exhaust gasket. Do you guys recommend spraying it with copper or installing it as is.

I always have, and never had an issue. It can't hurt.

I have a general rule of thumb when it comes to the use of Permatex Copper Spray.

When I have had the engine block and head decked, I will not use it as it should not be needed.

When I have just taken the head off to do a head gasket, then yes, I use it.

I too have done it either way, with no obvious difference in results. But a perfectly level and clean head/block should not need it.
