after prepping the motor for removal to replace the slipping clutch and fix oil leaks here and there ive begun to ponder the cooling system.i have never been a fan of using efans on a motor that makes power, they never seem to move enough air and tend to be unreliable.that being said im thinking of trying to refit the clutch fan and possibly relocate the radiator.here the trick tho, im using the r32 xmember which sits he motor a bit more forward than most mount kits, so that being said if anyone has fitted the clutch fan to a swapped car i would like to hear your thoughts on it.else chime in with any ideas you guys may have.

with ducting and good fans you shouldnt have a problem

my car has been great with some cooling panels on the sides and bottom of the radiator to block airflow and 2 12" perma cool fans

going on 3 years now.

ive never seen a clutchfan in a RB that didnt have a mckinney or similar kit.

Ive never seen one period...

Like Kamin said ducting does wonders, and shoudl be sufficuent. That being said, Ive heard AWESOME things about C&R double pass radiators, heres a nice comparison on different cooling setups for SR cars:

i dont think the solution to this problem is a clutch fan... the ideal solution IMO would be e-puller fans with ducting. e-fans, even with the inefficiency of the alternator are better than clutch fans. simply b/c of an additional rotating mass which cannot be efficient at all rpm ranges. the same reasoning goes for why ppl "upgrade" water pumps to electronic ones...

if you're going to try and fit something in front of the radiator, i'd try e-pullers.. just my 2c.

carl, im doing the same. well attempting. just wanna try it.

if funds let me, im taking measurements of a radiator thatll fit under the radiator support. i want it to slide all the way forward like the stock condensor is.

if i dont have cash for a custom sized radiator, then im cutting the top off my koyo filler kneck off and cutting th e bottom to jam it in there. either way im adding a expansion tank high above the engine to fill the coolant. i do have the stock radiator support cut, but that wont allow enough room for the clutch fan.

im just gonna attempt to barely clear the clutch fan then secure the radiator in there. then build a nice custom shroud.

fyi, those custom sized radiators can be picked up anywhere (ie griffen)

edit:

this is what i wanna do. this is an awesome build from a guy on ziptied. i talked to him and hes using a friends SR from a s13. he said he just jammed it in there.

Hey,Carl at the Nopi nationals that I met you at.I talked to a guy with a RB20 with the RB26 ITB setup on his S14. He had used a griffin radiator and put it under the Rad support. That should give you sufficient space to use the clutch fan.Personally I'm not a fan of using the clutch fan.It is a unnecessary waste of Power and e-fans come on stock cars and that are used every single day.If you but a nice e-fan and a thermo setup you wont have to worry about it.If you want I have another E-fan that I'm not using if you want. I dont think i can fit both in front of the rad.

well im not worried about power consumpton, my dual spal fan setup sucks down 30amps when on...but ive fitted an uprated alternator that supplies in the neighborhood of 110 amps.the real trick here is space, not enought of it.there is a griffin rad that fits PERFECLY under the core support of the s13 and s14, but the problem after that is fitting the fans behind itspal fans i have right now are nearly 4" thick...but they pull 1650cfm per fan for a total of 3300cfm...ducting on a rb car is definately neccisary, looking into that while the motor is out.

What alternator are you running?Or did you just rebuild your stock one?

Yeah you'll gain at least 2 inchs in the engine bay by putting the rad under the rad support instead of behind it.

How else can you gain 2 inchs so easliy without a pill?????????

If you want you can also use some slim pusher efans

My efans are probably like 2inchs (guessing)

what did you use to seal between your radiator and radiator support? Looks like some type of weather stripping? Mine is shredded and I need to get it replaced.

fal fans are teh boo...twin 12" fal fans only push 2500cfm, one of my spal 12" fans pushes 1650cfm.i've got some pics i can post up of the setup that im mock mounting, should work nicely.

yeah but if you have a cooling panel(top and bottom) and block off the sides, I don't see you having any cooling problems, but I haven't got the chance to test it yet cause my car is still in body shop. I would love to see some pics!

said pics of relocated rad, cant pull it any more forward due to wire harnesses in the way...so boo to that.anyways i have to cut a notch for the radiator cap and fab up a pipe to run back to the passenger side for the coolant outlet, that and slap some brackets on and she should be good to go.
