I agree about Boston. Worth the trip. Plenty of cool stuff to see/do.

Candlepin Bowling. kids love it. Somewhat unique to the area. think of it as bowling with a grapefruit - really fun
Want history?
USS Constitution - Old ironsides, oldest commissioned US warship, worth seeing
Bunker Hill Monument (looks like the Wash monument) as in "don't fire until you see the whites of their eyes." . If the stairs are open, its a great workout climbing to the top
Fanuiel Hall/Quincy Market: crowded and touristy: only for those that like to shop.
Catch a game at Fenway, a great ballpark, especially when the Yankees visit. the place rocks.
Like halloween? Visit its mecca, Salem Mass.

Chicago is a great city. Best ballpark in the US hands-down.

Austin is a cool city, IMO. How is San Diego on there and San Francisco is not? How is OAKLAND on there and SF is not? I wonder if they just meant the whole Bay Area, but they should've said that.

Chicago=EPIC WIN

By far the best place I have ever been for vacay. Lots of museums, cool places to go (sears tower, navy pier, wrigley field), really friendly people (many will help you if lost on the transit system.....lol). I dont see why anybody would complain. If you go you have to visit the museum of science and industry

A list like this is always going to be very subjective, and people are always going to disagree.

I agree. All though I'm probably biased because I live here (on the other hand I get to experience the city for what it really is), I think Chicago is a truley great city. It has so much to offer, great parks, restaurants, bars, museums, sporting events, shopping, landmarks, etc. It's pretty clean compared to other major cities. It has an amazing skyline, it's on a lake, it has a beach. You get to experience all four seasons, all though to some that's not a plus, but personally I think that automn here is amazing. Yes the winters can be a bit harsh, but it's part of what makes Chicago Chiago. The food is great, and you can find a vide variety of it everywhere.

Of course it's not without it's faults (what city isn't?) The public transportation system can be better, all though it's not terrible. And there's also areas in the city that you don't want to be in, especially after the sun goes down. But overall, I think it's a great city and I enjoy living here.

Austin is a pretty cool city. downtown Austin is relatively clean and its one of Tx's fittest cities. People bike and run daily. there are plenty of bars/clubs and restaurants, the people are nice. but there is a high population of homeless and traffic on I-35 can suck. and it is and hour and half away from San Antonio :gapteeth:

Oakland does NOT deserve to be on that list. S.F. top it. I mean, where else can you go to be eaten by a tiger?

I think I agree with most of the people here who think Chicago is a great city. I was just there visiting last weekend and had an incredible time. Two days was nowhere near enough to appreciate it.

As for the rest of the list, I've only ever been to two other cities on it (DC and NYC) so not much to chime in on there. They were obviously going to make the list and for good reason.

Boston Is fun any time of the day. during the day I usually go to chinatown and get Pho, and just shop around. Usually I go to the Commons and Garden, Even The Prudential and Copley are fun. I love the Skywalk as it offers a panoramic view of Boston, and on a clear day I can see my hometown of Lynn. The surrounding area is nice as well. you get that old New england charm as well as beautiful North Shore and Anisquam. I fell in love with the North Shore and towns like rockport, Manchester by the sea, and Essex because as A kid I would paint homes out there with my father.

Have you been there? Pike's Place, space needle and it's grounds, university lane...lot's of good stuff to do. Heavy asian influence.
And Portland doesn't deserve the top 10...maybe top 20...we DO have the greatest microbrew culture in the states. As well as the highest per capita in strip clubs. Good place for foodies too.
Yeah, I lived there for two years and was there for two weeks before I got back Sunday.

I just don't like the "mindset" people have there. If you've been there, you can understand what I mean. I came from the Midwest and now live in the Southwest. I am by no means a hick either, I'm part asian. As far as the attractions there, they're ALL full of tourists. For some reason people like to make Seattle a destination, which baffles me. All the nice places like downtown Kirkland and Pike's Place and packed full of tourists (many from other countries) who are very rude, get-out-of-my-way, I don't care, and just not cool to be around. I don't see what the big "draw" to Seattle is.

Seafair last week there was cool though. The Blue Angels, hydroplane races, and a fleet of Navy ships were there. Too bad it rained. Another reason why Seattle sucks for 10months out of the year.

Yep, Maine is beautiful too. But I believe cities are great if taken in moderation.

My brother was there a few months ago. Supposedly things are back to normal -- lots of murder, lots of amazing food.

Uhhh ... that is what "tie for 1st" usually means in this context. :yesnod Basically, you are supposed to skip the next one(s) down when you tie for a position. So that the total number of "winners" remains unchanged in any such ranking.

For example, if there had also been "two entries tied for 4th" for example, there would not be any winner in the 5th position. If there had been "three entries tied for 6th", then there should not be any 7th and 8th position winners.

Most people forget or don't understand this very old and elementary concept. :)

Sorry for being pedantic! :chuckle:
