i had my max for little more than a year now and i haven't changed the coolant on it and not sure weather the previous owners did it so is it ok to do a coolant flush and b/c i have heard that sometimes its bad for the radiator

pick up a coolant tester at walmart for a few bucks and you'll know if yours is good or needs to be replaced. the flush might be bad if the mechanic runs too high of pressure through the system. if you go with the garden hose flush you'll be ok when it comes to not risking a crack but tap water is bad for the rad.

easiest but not cheapest way is to do a few drain/fills yourself - at least you'll know what coolant you got in there.

I had mine done at valvoline they tested it for me and did the flush for around $80 I think. It takes about 10 minutes. Deffinatily do it if the coolent is bad it can kill the water pump. The coolent doesn't just keep the car cool and from freezing but keep the system lubricated and just like oil it degrades over time.
