coolant spraying everywhere

i just replaced my thermostat today while i was at work, 1st time around, the housing didnt seal up right, leaked coolant all the way home. So i re- did it at home, wasnt leaking(as far as im aware) but i added a little extra coolant in the overflow tank, just encase i didnt put enough in the radiator. So i popped my hood later on that night, and coolant had sprayed all over. Looked as if it leaked out the overflow a little bit. Also i made quite a mess when it all leaked out the 1st time, and when burping the radiator, made quite a mess. I dont know if its leaking or just spraying all over from the left over coolant that i spilled. but its sprayed out on the outside of the drivers side fender, and quite a bit had built up over by the overflow tank. Has anyone else had any experiences like this, or if anyone could give me some advice that would be great. I hate cleaning up coolant, its such a pain. Any ideas on how to clean up my engine bay would be nice too. Thanks
