anyone get the july issue of car and driver ? simply one of the best peice of auto literature ive seen in awhile coarse im a vette head that had alot to do with it .

anyway there is article by patrick benard about coolant and a new zerex that is a long life coolant that can be ran in our engines that have had the green stuff in them and also talks about the dangers of running stright water in a cooling system .

also there is some kind of race coolant that just contains anticorrsives and can be ran in a system that never sees frezzing temps but will help a engine keep cooler in the summer

anyway good reading here , seen it Q tech ?

The only problem with 20-25% AF in distilled water [aluminum blocks don't rust they benefically corrode to form a protective film] is the additives are half the 50/50 strength so they wear out faster. 100,000 mile becomes 25,000 miles. But that is no problem for those that use my spring rad drain method and refill with 3 quarts Pure distilled water and the late fall rad drain and refill with 3 quarts of 100% long life antifreeze. So it cyles between 20-48% [25-50] with new additives every fall.

It is very easy to measure the PH of the coolant or cathodic action [battery like] with inexpensive dc volt meter [one lead on the neck and one tip submersed in the coolant at neck......any voltage above 50-75 millivolts means the additives are too low and the coolant has turned acidic!

Actually you don't need the ethylene glycol in the AF. you just need the additives to protect the aluminum and distilled water would be perfect above freezing. [warning the heater core could freeze from the ac cold on some cars if the blocking door failed so always use 20% AF as a safety factor].

See how they cheat is the 50/50 PREMIX is half distilled water so they are selling you 2 quarts of water for $3.00-$5.00 and the whole gallon is $6-$10.

The Redlne Wetter Water [surface tension reducer-steam bubble burster] rounds out the perfect coolant and it must be replenished as well 1 oz per quart drained. So buy 2 bottles and you are good between total flushes....every year if you are like me but realistically every 2 years.

I'm not sure this article was good for the general public as they didn't delineate the differences between iron and aluminum blocks and heads.

......"Super Coolant contains inhibitors only—special antifoaming agents and protection during boiling—Turcotte says, and it's compatible with aluminum, iron, and other materials common in older cars.

Imagine boosting the effectiveness of your cooling system 25 percent simply by changing the radiator fluid.".........?????

Very confusing and a sales pitch for a new advertiser!!!!!!!!!!!!!

By the way since the ethylene gylcol doesn't turn into acid if the additive are replenished semi drivers test the additives every 90 days [roughly 40,000 miles] and add a 12-16 oz bottle of pure additives.

Kind of cost effective if your radiator holds 10-15-20 gallons of coolant vs ours of 2.5.

We also carry a BG product called Super Cool which is just PURE additives but I never sell it as a flush is better especially with out a history and some of the additives are designed for iron blocks.

I have tried it with distilled water and it work great but the heat core risk!
