Does the 91 Q45 have coolant lines going under the intake manifold.. I smell a coolant leak and it seems to be coming from that area.. if so how much of a pain in the neck is it to replace.. should I attempt it myself or just bring it to the dealer.

Lots of coolant lines [that leak] when old and destroyed from heat. Think carefully about how long you plan on keeping the car and how many times you want to pay labor to pull the plenum off because there is a fuel injector harness and a knock sensor/coolant temp harness that also get brittle by 10 years.

Vacuum control, positive crankcase air lines.........lots of hoses period and cables. Every time the plenum is pulled you need to replace the 8 runner joining rubber gaskets to avoid vacuum leaks.

well how many hours labor is it for the r&r of the plenum and what would it cost to replace all the hoses etc?

To replace ALL the 30 or so hoses say $240, plus the KS harness $85, plus the injector harness $250 plus around 8 hours labor say around $1100 at T3, obviously different locations and labor rates will be different but even in San Fran it should be less than $1500.Many places just replace the leakers and the few hoses they break pulling the plenum [setting up the owner for another job real soon] for around $750-$1000.

Same with a bad 3,4,5,6 injector do you change one for $700 or all 4 for $1200 and change the harness for another $200.

Complete R&R [all 8 injectors] adds another $600 or so.

So you can spend any amount you want to..............if the engine is run long enough you might get to $2300 in a bad gas location.

Then the $500 to reseal the eventually leaking valve covers.

Of course the chain guides at $1200-$2500 for 90-93.

Some are lucky [financially] depending on maintenance and where they live and the luck of the draw.

150k may be time to call it quits as this is twice the 70k warranty some people have a tolerance for 210k and some 280k.

Ive already done the chain guides and the have replaced the injectors "all of them" I assume Arizona is a bad gas area. apparently when they replaced the injectors they didnt look at the hoses seeing as the injectors were done about 10k ago.

They didn't look! You must be proactive and get fully involved as you are the one paying!Very few technicans are qualified to evaluate your financial situations.........nor have you had a discussion with them about your future plans for the car.

If some one told you up front that the engine might need $5,000 in R&R if you kept the car long enough == what might you decide.

Chain guides, injectors, hoses, harnesses, valve cover reseals, knock sensors, etc.

If doing everything at once saved $1000 would you spend the $4,000.................most take the incremential approach and repay plenum removal labor 2 or 3 times.

Why I warn potential buyers that an old Q can require $3,000 of work......if I said $8,000 without a complete examination I would most likely be way over in estimate...............the $4-5,000 price differential [same year] between a Q and an LS400 is very very reflective of the true AVERAGE situation.

Actually I did tell them to let me know if there was anything else that needs replacing while they were under there.. which is always the case. anytime i have them remove something thats labor intensive I tell them to check if anything else needs doing. So it must of been lack of caring or just not seeing it.

Then use that to negotiate a reasonable rate to replace all the hoses... esp. if the other work was done within the last 6 months.

Was prior work done at dealer or independent shop?

Just take it back and let them check it out. Could be something simple?? One thing you can do to check is pull off the three plastic covers on the front of the engine -- gives a better view of the hoses. (I've taken mine off and left them off.)
