I just picked up a '90 fastback and there's coolant in the crankcase. Cause when I checked the oil on the dipstick there's coolant mixed w/ the oil. the car has 173k miles on it, is it possible the head is cracked? Also, the reason for this is either a cracked head gasket, or the head itself is cracked I looked it up in the chilton service manual. Has anyone else out there had this problem before? It seems the car was run on low coolant before, and the water pump had to be replaced. But it looks like whoever did the job didn't replace the head gasket. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

I would also check all the timing chain stuff while you have it appart. I have heard the single cam chain would wear out and wear a hole into one of the water jackets, that would happen maby at 170k and would cause what your talking about.

I took off the valve cover today and the timing chain has pretty good tension, also it looks like the plastic timing chain guides were replaced recently they look new

UPDATE 5/3/05: I bought a re-built ka24-e and swapped it in place of the old motor and it's been working just fine. I've got about 600 miles on the new motor, it pulls pretty hard. I'd like to buy a new clutch soon though hehe. I've smoked 9 civics 4 integras, and another 240sx '89, and 2 crx's. I love my car now that it runs
